TWENTYMAN: Week 15 observations

Not just a sack artist: Aidan Hutchinson makes his money sacking opposing quarterbacks and has 37.0 career sacks but Detroit's fourth-year edge rusher has also recorded five career interceptions. He had one Sunday that he returned 58 yards to set up Detroit's first touchdown. Hutchinson is the first defensive lineman to produce five interceptions through four career seasons in the Super Bowl era (since 1967).

Gutsy call: Head coach Dan Campbell made a gutsy fourth-down call at the end of the first half going for a 4th & 1 at the Lions' 29-yard line but both he and quarterback Jared Goff knew the play was going to work. Goff said it was a play they prepped all week and loved the defensive look they got as it resulted in a 14-yard Goff to wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown completion in what turned into a touchdown drive for the Lions.

Off night for Gibbs, Lions' run game: Running back Jahmyr Gibbs gained just 38 yards on 13 carries (2.9 average), while only catching four passes for 20 yards through the air. Detroit totaled just 70 yards rushing on 20 carries for a 3.5-yard average. It was the third lowest rushing total of the year for the Lions (Week 1 vs. Green Bay, 46; Week 9 vs. Minnesota, 65).

Tackle machine: Linebacker Jack Campbell recorded 14 total tackles - 10 solo - setting a single-game career high in solo tackles and registering the second most total tackles he's logged in a game. Campbell now has 143 tackles on the season with 77 solo and has produced 125 tackles in consecutive seasons.

McVay vs. Sheppard: Rams head coach Sean McVay is one of the best play callers in the NFL and it was going to be a tough task for first-year defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard to try and slow down an explosive Rams' offense while down three starters in the secondary.

McVay was able to run the ball and found the soft spots in Sheppard's defense to the tune of 41 points and 519 total yards. Sheppard has done a good job navigating Detroit's injuries on defense throughout the season, but McVay and the Rams' offense got the better of the matchup on this day.

First touchback: It took 14 weeks but punter Jack Fox’s streak of punts without a touchback came to an end Sunday in LA. Punting from the Detroit 35-yard line in the fourth quarter, Fox's 65-yard punt flew into the end zone ending his streak.

Rush defense: Detroit came into Sunday allowing on average 102.7 rushing yards per game this season, which ranked 10th in the NFL. The Rams went to work on the ground against the Lions, finishing with 159 yards on 29 carries (5.5 avg.) with three touchdowns. With all the weapons the Rams have in the pass game, they are almost impossible to stop when they can get into their play-action pass game off the run and the Lions found that out the hard way Sunday.
