5 things to watch: Lions at Bengals

The Detroit Lions are on the road in Cincinnati today looking for their fourth straight victory on the young NFL season.

Here are five things to watch out for in today's matchup at Paycor Stadium against the Bengals:

1. CORNERBACK ROTATION

The Lions will be without top cornerback D.J. Reed for at least the next three games starting today in Cincinnati after he suffered a hamstring injury in last week's win over the Cleveland Browns and was placed on IR this week.

The Lions will likely shift nickel cornerback Amik Robertson outside opposite Terrion Arnold and potentially move veteran Avonte Maddox into the slot, though they have multiple options to play in the slot. The Bengals have struggled in the passing game since the loss of All-Pro quarterback Joe Burrow – the Bengals rank 30th in passing coming in – but Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins are one of the better receiving duos in the NFL and they can make big plays if the Lions allow them to.

2. O-LINE PLAY

Detroit's offensive line has arguably been the best unit in football over the last three weeks. Quarterback Jared Goff is looking for his fourth straight contest without being sacked and Detroit ranks No. 6 in the league in rushing, averaging 139.0 yards per game.

Veteran left tackle Taylor Decker was was listed as questionable to play on Friday's injury report because of the shoulder injury he's been dealing with all year. If Decker can't go, the Lions could turn to Giovanni Manu, who would be making his first career start at left tackle.

The Bengals have an active front defensively, led by All-Pro edge rusher Trey Hendrickson, who has 2.0 sacks on the season and plays most of his snaps across the left tackle. This offense is at its best when they establish the run and use their play-action pass game off it. The Lions will be looking for more of the same this week regardless of who lines up.

3. ATTACKING DEFENSE

Defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard has the Lions' defense playing well in every phase through the first month of the season. Detroit comes into today's contest second in the NFL in sacks with 14.0 just one behind Denver (15.0) for the league lead. Eight different Lions defenders have recorded a sack, led by Aidan Hutchinson with 4.0.

Al-Quadin Muhammad (3.5 sacks) has established himself as a reliable rusher opposite Hutchinson, and Detroit has one of the most productive blitz packages in the league. The Bengals aren't equipped to play behind the sticks with Jake Browning at quarterback. If the Lions can consistently get after Browning, either sacking him or moving him off his spot, it could be a long afternoon for the Bengals' passing attack.

4. ST. BROWN ROLLING

Lions fifth-year wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown is off to a terrific start. He had two receiving touchdowns last week against the Browns which gives him an NFL-leading six touchdowns on the season. It was St. Brown's fifth career game with two-plus touchdown catches.

St. Brown is looking for a fourth-straight game today with at least seven-plus receptions, 70-plus yards and a touchdown catch. He has at least six receptions in seven of his last games on the road. He and Goff are two of the best in the business at their respective positions and they will look to continue rolling today against a Bengals' defense that ranks 30th against the pass.

5. HOMECOMING

It's amazing that in 92 NFL games played and 37 games played in college at Iowa State that Lions veteran running back David Montgomery has never played in his home city of Cincinnati. The seven-year NFL veteran, who was a high school football star at Mount Healthy High School in Cincinnati, said this week he's extremely motivated to put on a show for the family and friends who will be in attendance this afternoon.

Montgomery and fellow Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs form the best running back duo in the NFL. Montgomery will be looking for a similar outing to what he had the last time the Lions were on the road Week 3 in Baltimore when he rushed for over 150 yards with a touchdown.
