Watching Lions' defense makes McNeill excited to return

Watching Detroit's defense make play after play for most of Monday night's practice at the Meijer Performance Center, especially upfront, made veteran defensive lineman Alim McNeill excited about his return to the field.

"Defense has looked good," McNeill said walking off the practice field Monday. "They are flying around a little bit getting up field and it's going to fun (when I join them)."

McNeill is currently on the physically unable to perform list after tearing his ACL Dec. 15 in a loss to Buffalo. Lions general manager Brad Holmes told Sirius XM Radio at the beginning of training camp that McNeill had the potential to be back earlier than expected. McNeill didn't give any firm date for his return.

He said he feels great and he's happy with where he's at in his rehab.

"I'm doing great," he said. "I don't really call it rehab anymore. I'm in a spot now where I'm just training. I feel really good. Things are going good, so I can't complain. I feel great."

McNeill has been one of the better defensive tackles in football over the past couple of years. In 2023 he was Pro Football Focus' sixth-highest graded (88.5) defensive tackle, recorded 5.0 sacks, and had 34 pressures. Last year he had 45 pressures and a 77.1 PFF pass rush grade (13th).

The Lions used their first-round pick this offseason on defensive lineman Tyleik Williams and he's coming off arguably his best practice of training camp Monday when he recorded two sacks on quarterback Jared Goff and was also good against the run. Veteran DJ Reader is a known commodity in this league and a reliable veteran.

Add McNeill to that mix and Detroit has to really like what's developing in the middle of their defensive front sandwiched between edge rushers Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport. The Lions generated the fourth most pressures from a team's interior defensive line last season with 132. Only Denver (182), Seattle (139) and Philadelphia (137) had more.

We've yet to see Williams and McNeill on the field together. When it happens this defensive front could be a lot to handle.
