Camp Notes: Williams' power & quickness on display at evening Lions practice

Detroit Lions first-round draft pick Tyleik Williams had his best practice of training camp Monday night as the Lions held an early evening practice at the Meijer Performance Center.

Williams recorded two sacks on quarterback Jared Goff in team periods and made a number of other nice plays in the run game. His sacks were on bull rushes, pushing veteran center Graham Glasgow and left guard Christian Mahogany right back into Goff.

When he and veteran edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson lined up together, they were a lot to handle for a Lions' offense that was without left tackles Taylor Decker, Dan Skipper and Jamarco Jones because of injury.

"If you got good people around you, you'll be fine," Williams said earlier in camp about Detroit's starting defensive front that features Hutchinson, Marcus Davenport, himself and DJ Reader.

Williams' power was on full display on the sacks, but he's also showed off nimble feet for a 330-pound man. He's got great initial quickness to cross the face of defenders and knock them off balance and then let his power and push take over. He plays a lot on the other side of the line of scrimmage. Don't forget he had a 10-yard split of 1.74 seconds at 330 pounds during his pro day.

He's settling into his role in this defense and Monday was his best day of camp so far.

RAKESTRAW UPDATE

Head coach Dan Campbell provided an update on cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. prior to Monday's practice. Rakestraw suffered a shoulder injury earlier in camp in a one-on-one tackling drill.

"I think it's going to be a while," Campbell said Monday when asked about Rakestraw's long-term prognosis. "We're getting it checked now. We'll know more in due time.

"I hate it for the kid. You hate it. It's not his fault. Just one of those tough deals. All you can do is try and get it better, rehab, come back stronger, and move on. That's all you can do."

OFFENSIVE PROGRESSION

The defense was ahead of the offense in OTAs, and during the first two weeks of training camp the defensive days have probably outnumbered the offensive days. That's not uncommon around the league early in camp.

But Campbell is happy about how the offense is progressing with the start of the regular season a little more than a month away.

"It feels like every camp there's things that you see that you're growing at and you like and then there's things you're frustrated with, some of the, 'We jump offsides here or we're not in the right split here or we fumbled the ball here,'" Campbell said.

"And those are all things that this time of year, you hate to say it, but they rear their head a little bit and we've got to clean all of that stuff up, and we will.

"We've put an emphasis on it, we've talked about it, but I like where we're going, I do. I feel like we get a little bit more in rhythm, we get a little bit better every day and with another game, that's only going to help communication, all those things and then we'll get another game and another game and more practices. So, I like where we're at."

ROSTER UPDATES

The team placed rookie safety Dan Jackson on Reserve/Injured Monday after he suffered a leg injury during Sunday's practice.

Detroit also waived (injured) running back Kye Robichaux and signed cornerbacks D.J. Miller and Luq Barcoo.
