5 things to know about new OC Drew Petzing

The Detroit Lions have named Drew Petzing as their new offensive coordinator.

Here are five things to know about Detroit's new leader on offense:

1. Run game importance

Petzing, 38, was the offensive coordinator in Arizona under former Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon the last three seasons. There are schematic elements to his offense that make him a good fit in Detroit, most importantly his commitment to having a solid rushing attack.

In 2024, the Cardinals rushed for 2,451 yards and 18 touchdowns with a 5.3 yards per carry average. The rushing yards were the third most in Cardinals team history and the highest total since 1979. Arizona's 5.3 yards per carry average was the highest in team history and the 16th best average in NFL history. Arizona was one of only two teams in the NFL to average better than 5.0 yards per carry in both 2023 and 2024.

Arizona finished seventh in rushing, 11th in total offense and 12th in points scored in 2024. Those numbers weren't sustained in 2025 but that's not too surprising considering they lost quarterback Kyler Murray, running back James Conner and wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. to injury for most of the season.

Conner was a back-to-back 1,000-yard rusher in both 2023 and 2024 in Petzing's first two seasons running the Cardinals' offense. Petzing now inherits a Lions rushing attack that was top 10 in the NFL in touchdowns (21) and average yards per rush (4.6) this past season behind Pro Bowl running back Jahmyr Gibbs.

2. Experience in NFC North

Petzing worked with the Minnesota Vikings in 2014-19, where he rose from offensive assistant to wide receivers coach. During his tenure with Minnesota, Petzing helped the Vikings win two NFC North division titles (2015 & 2017) while also qualifying for the postseason as a Wild Card team in 2019.

He has worked with a wide range of offensive personnel groups. In Minnesota, he was an offensive assistant (2014-15), assistant receivers coach (2016-17), assistant quarterbacks coach (2018) and receivers coach (2019).

Petzing coached tight ends and quarterbacks with the Cleveland Browns under Kevin Stefanski before joining the Cardinals as offensive coordinator.

3. Tight end usage

After recording just 235 receiving yards in his first season before Petzing arrived, tight end Trey McBride averaged 106 receptions for 1,070 yards and five touchdowns over the past three seasons. He had a career-high 126 receptions for 1,239 yards and 11 touchdowns this past season.

Lions Pro Bowl tight end Sam LaPorta was limited to just nine games this season because of a back injury but caught 146 passes for 1,615 yards and 17 touchdowns his first two seasons combined. Petzing's offenses in Arizona have mostly been under center with heavy play action featuring the running backs and tight ends.

4. Wide receiver development

When Petzing was the Vikings wide receivers coach in 2019, Stefon Diggs set a then career-high with 1,130 receiving yards, his second consecutive 1,000-yard season. He finished fourth in the league that season with a 17.9-yard average on 63 receptions.

In 2017 as an assistant receivers coach, Petzing helped Adam Thielen earn Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors with 91 receptions for 1,276 yards and four touchdowns.

The Lions were the only team in the NFL this season to have two receivers (Amon-Ra St. Brown & Jameson Williams) finish in the top 10 in receiving yards. Isaac TeSlaa also showed promise with six touchdowns as a rookie. It's a group that should hit the ground running under Petzing.

5. Lions connection

Petzing was a graduate assistant at Boston College in 2010-11 where he worked with former Lions offensive coordinator and current Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson.
