2025 position breakdown: Quarterbacks

The good: Quarterback Jared Goff finished the 2025 season second in passing yards (4,564), second in touchdowns (34), third in passer rating (105.5), sixth in completion percentage (68.0) and sixth in yards per attempt (7.9). His eight interceptions were the fewest he's thrown since the seven he recorded in 2022 as he led the league's fourth-ranked scoring offense and fifth-ranked total offense in the NFL.

Goff had a new offensive coordinator this season after Ben Johnson left for the Chicago head coaching job. That was an adjustment Goff had to navigate and he did so with ease. Then Lions head coach Dan Campbell took over play-calling duties from John Morton in Week 10. While the offense didn't change, that's a pivot Goff had to adjust to midseason.

More was put on Goff's plate in terms of the protections in the pass game after the retirement of All-Pro center Frank Ragnow last offseason. Goff navigated three new starters along the offensive line well. He was sacked only six more times this season vs. last season (39 vs. 33) despite the Lions' pass block win rate dropping from 64 percent in 2024 (ranked 12th) to 56 percent (ranked 31st) in 2025.

Goff helped the Lions rank fourth in third-down conversion percentage (47.6) and third in red-zone scoring (69.4). He had a 113.7 passer rating in the red zone (ranked third) and a 97.9 rating on third down, which ranked fifth among quarterbacks with at least 100 pass attempts on third down.

The bad: In 2024 Goff was one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL against the blitz. When teams sent extra rushers, he had a 119.7 passer rating with 16 touchdowns, four interceptions and was sacked eight times.

Against the blitz this season, Goff's passer rating dipped to 96.6 with eight touchdowns, two interceptions and 13 sacks. Something to consider here is the decline in overall offensive line play from 2024 to 2025 and how that played a factor in those numbers against the blitz.

The Lions saw their number of dropped passes increase this season. While that's not a reflection of Goff, it helps explain his minor drop in completion percentage (72.4 to 68.0) from 2024 to 2025.

Key stat: Detroit had the third most completions of 20-plus yards (66) this season behind only New England (69) and the Los Angeles Rams (72). Goff's accuracy down the field, especially in the middle part of the field, has been a huge weapon for the Lions' passing game the last three seasons.

Free agents: Kyle Allen (unrestricted)

Allen won the No. 2 quarterback job in training camp and the preseason but only saw 16 snaps in mop-up duty and attempted only two passes. If Allen is comfortable with his role in Detroit, he's a great fit. He was good in the quarterback room and has 19 career starts under his belt. If he's looking for another opportunity to start, he may look for a different opportunity in free agency. If Allen doesn't re-sign, the Lions will likely look to sign an experienced veteran to compete for a backup role.

Draft: The Lions could look for a young quarterback later in the draft to start developing and have compete for a backup or third quarterback spot. Detroit last drafted a quarterback (Hendon Hooker) in 2023 in the third round.

Garrett Nussmeier (LSU), Drew Allar (Penn State), Cade Klubnik (Clemson), Behren Morton (Texas Tech), Sawyer Robertson (Baylor), Diego Pavia (Vanderbilt) and Luke Altmyer (Illinois) are some mid to late-round prospects to consider.

Quotable: "Yeah, there's been challenges, but it's part of the job," Goff said at the end of the regular season. "There's ups and downs through the season. We would've liked to get on a little bit of a stretch there at some point in the last eight games and be able to string a few together and get out of that adversity.

"But we weren't able to and it sucks and I wish there was a magic potion that would have fixed everything, but there isn't. It's about work and doing the right thing over and over and being on the same page and communication and execution, the whole thing. So, yeah. I don't know. How have I weathered it? Hopefully well, but I don't know."
