Week 3 opponent: What the Ravens are saying

What are the Baltimore Ravens talking about ahead of Monday's matchup against the Lions at M&T Bank Stadium in front of a national audience?

1. During an April 14 appearance on Kay Adams' 'Up & Adams', then Georgia safety and now Ravens rookie Malaki Starks was asked which quarterback he wanted to intercept a pass from in the NFL. His answer was Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff.

"He's like an elite of elite quarterback, so just being able to add that to my resume. Some of the guys, the way they talk about him, I mean, that would be cool," Starks said at the time.

So, does Starks still feel the same way heading into Monday's matchup?

"(Goff)'s an elite quarterback in the league. (I have) much respect for him. So, yes, I (would) love to for sure," Starks said this week.

2. The Ravens could be without last year's leading sacker, outside linebacker Kyle Van Noy, after he suffered a hamstring injury in Baltimore's win over Cleveland last week. If Van Noy can't go, rookie Mike Green could see an increased role.

"I think, like you said, we'll all have to step up," outside linebacker Tavius Robinson said. "And again, put in a little bit of extra work because Van Noy, he's still going to be in the film room with us. He always does a great job of giving us tells and stuff like that. So, we'll still have his knowledge out there on the field with us."

3. Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said one of the difficult parts about playing Detroit's offense is how they stress the middle of the field with crossing routes, in-breaking routes, high-low concepts and play-action passes. He said Detroit does a good job making the linebackers play up and then throwing behind them, and it's tough to stop, especially with the weapons on the outside. "It's good stuff," Harbaugh said.

4. Ravens All-Pro safety Kyle Hamilton was asked Thursday what jumped out to him about the Lions' offense, particularly the 52-point performance last week against the Bears.

"They have one of the best running back duos in the league," Hamilton said. "I think they start off with just getting those guys going and deservedly so. Those guys are talented, and the line is talented and they set up their passing game through play action and stuff like that."

5. Lions edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson recorded his first sack of the season and had seven total pressures in Detroit's win over Chicago. Ravens tackle Roger Rosengarten said they are preparing for Hutchinson the same way they do every opponent each week.

"Every week, you go against probably one of the best rushers in the NFL, and that's definitely been a highly-paid position. Those guys disrupt games, so it's part of my job and the rest of the offensive line's job to minimize those guys' (opportunities) for making plays. But I think if we clean up a lot of the stuff before the snap happens – being on the same page and all that stuff – I think if we trust our technique, we'll come out good."

6. Consider Hamilton a big fan of Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown’s game. Hamilton said most of all he respects the toughness St. Brown brings to the position, especially in the run game.

"I think it's kind of rare at the receiver position to approach the position like he does," Hamilton said.

7. Starks was asked this week what the focus for the Ravens' defense was facing a Lions team ranked third in the NFL averaging 32.5 points through their first two contests. The first thing Starks talked about was Detroit's versatility on offense and how well-coached they looked on tape. He said the biggest point of emphasis for them this week is being on their p's and q's from a communication standpoint. They can't have any communication issues or missed assignments against an offense as explosive and versatile as Detroit's.
