If the Detroit Lions are going to secure the victory in a huge early season road test in Baltimore Monday night, they'll need quarterback Jared Goff to stay hot.
Goff completed 23-of-28 passes (82.1 percent) for 334 yards. He tied a career-high with five touchdown passes for a 156.0 passer rating in leading the Lions to an NFL-high 52 points in their Week 2 victory over Chicago.
His five touchdown passes and 156.0 passer rating led the league in Week 2. Goff now has five career starts in which his team scored at least 50 points, tied with Peyton Manning (5) for the fourth-most such starts by a quarterback since 1950.
Goff's performance earned him his seventh career NFC Offensive Player of the Week award and his fourth since joining the Lions in 2021.
"Jared Goff is elite," Lions pass game coordinator David Shaw said Thursday. "Whatever category that you put together of elite players, he's in that category. That's his standard and it's our job as coaches to give him the information and opportunity to play up to his standard. I'm glad he's on our team."
It's only Week 3, but the Baltimore Ravens have given up on average just under 300 passing yards per game (298.0), which includes allowing nearly 400 yards passing to quarterback Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills in a Week 1 loss. The Lions come into this week fifth in total offense (378.5) and fifth in passing (267.0).
"It felt good to get on a good page there," Goff said Thursday of the passing attack vs. Chicago last week. "Felt like we were completing a lot of balls and getting down the field with a lot of explosives and the whole thing. It really starts upfront. Those guys pass pro like that, it's going to be tough to stop us. This Monday night we'd like to throw it like that again."
BIGGER ROLE FOR MUHAMMAD
The Lions aren't sure if veteran edge rusher Marcus Davenport will be able to play Monday after injuring his shoulder last week against the Chicago Bears. Lions head coach Dan Campbell said Thursday they really won't know until later in the week.
If Davenport doesn't play, I expect a big role for Al-Quadin Muhammad, who saw his reps increase from seven defensive snaps Week 1 to 36 against Chicago Week 2. He was Detroit's second highest graded pass rusher by Pro Football Focus Week 2, finishing with a sack and a couple hurries.
"The goal is for me and him to feed off each other," Muhammad said of playing opposite Aidan Hutchinson. "They have to turn somebody loose. A lot of teams know what he can do. It's a great challenge for me to show this league what I can do."
Even if Davenport is available, Campbell said Muhammad has earned more playing time moving forward.
"He's crafty, he's strong, he's got some explosiveness and he plays hard," Campbell said this week of Muhammad. "Guy plays hard. I mean, there was a number of plays - I can think of three right now - where he is running out of the stack, he's running out of, ball is thrown, screen, and he is running to try to get the ball or making a tackle.
"And it's that kind of effort with what he's got ability-wise, that gives you a chance. So, he's been big for us and he's going to get more of a role. He's earned that."

SCOUTING REPORT
It's hard to contain Derrick Henry and a really good Baltimore rushing attack, but Cleveland did a great job in that regard last week. Henry was held to 23 yards on 11 carries, while the Ravens were limited to just 45 yards rushing.
"They had a bunch of guys at the line of scrimmage, and they were triggering the run right away," Ravens head coach John Harbaugh told baltimoreravens.com this week. "When you get a run key, you're hitting gaps, running through gaps. I would say they were blitzing the run. It wasn't a blitz call, but it's a blitz reaction to the run."
Is it something Detroit's defense could duplicate this week?
"That's part of the issue that you're going to deal with, because you can. OK, you sell out there, then the guy can still make these throws," Campbell said of Baltimore's MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson, who had four touchdown passes against the Browns as Baltimore still scored 41 points despite rushing for only 45 yards.
"There's a lot of space behind there. If you're going to sell out for the run, there's a ton of space for these receivers. Then your cornerbacks get hung out to dry, but yet that's part of the deal, too. So, there's just so many different things and obviously Lamar (Jackson) is the catalyst, he's the guy that makes it go, he can do so many things."
Still, the goal Monday should be to make Jackson a pocket passer and if he beats you in that regard, you tip your cap and move on to Cleveland Week 4. If Jackson and Henry can establish the run and they have a run/pass option, that offense is so much more difficult to handle collectively.
EXTRA POINT
Since Week 12 of the 2024 season including the playoffs, Jackson has 10 consecutive games with at least two touchdown passes and a passer rating of 90-or-higher. Only five quarterbacks have recorded longer such streaks: Aaron Rodgers (14), Peyton Manning (13), Philip Rivers (13), Tom Brady (12) and Patrick Mahomes (11).
