TWENTYMAN: What Hutchinson extension means for Lions' defense

The Detroit Lions have locked up another one of their core players for the long term.

The team and Pro Bowl edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson have agreed to a contract extension that will keep Hutchinson in Detroit through the 2030 season.

Hutchinson was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft by the Lions and has been one of the best edge rushers in the NFL ever since. His 34.0 sacks are the most in franchise history over a player's first four seasons.

He currently leads the NFL in total pressures generated (48), most quarterback hurries (33) and is tied for the league lead in forced fumbles (4). Hutchinson has the third-highest pass-rush win percentage (25.2) and fourth-highest pressure percentage (19.2) among the league's pass rushers this season. His 6.0 sacks currently rank seventh.

After missing most of last season with a broken leg, Hutchinson has returned to form in 2025 and is a big reason why the Lions rank fifth in the league in sacks and are top 10 in total defense (eighth).

He and Al-Quadin Muhammad (5.0 sacks) form one of the more productive edge duos in the NFL through the first eight weeks of the season. Paired with a talented defensive tackle group that includes Alim McNeill, DJ Reader, Tyleik Williams and Roy Lopez, the Lions have one of the deeper and more productive defensive line units in the NFL. Detroit heads into Week 9 with the fourth best run defense in the NFL, allowing on average just 87.7 yards per game on the ground.

Hutchinson now joins tackle Penei Sewell, wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, McNeill, linebacker Derrick Barnes, safety Kerby Joseph and wide receiver Jameson Williams as core members of the roster drafted by the team to receive extensions the last couple years.
