RECAP: Lions vs. Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings came into Sunday's matchup vs. Detroit having lost five straight to the Lions and four in a row at Ford Field.

But Minnesota has a new starting quarterback and J.J. McCarthy made it 1-0 in his career vs. Detroit as he threw two touchdowns and ran for another, guiding Minnesota to a 27-24 victory over the Lions.

After an opening possession touchdown for Detroit on a 40-yard catch and run by tight end Sam LaPorta, the Lions' offense had a tough time finding any consistency for most of the contest and was held to 305 total yards and just 65 rushing yards.

McCarthy threw touchdown passes to wide receiver Justin Jefferson (10 yards) and tight end T.J. Hockenson (7) and rushed for a 9-yard score.

David Montgomery recorded Detroit's second touchdown of the contest on a 2-yard run in the second quarter. Quarterback Jared Goff hit wide receiver Jameson Williams for a 37-yard touchdown with one minute, 55 seconds left in the game to trim the Vikings' lead to 27-24.

The Lions kicked it to Minnesota with all three of their timeouts, but on 3rd & 5 at the Vikings' 28-yard line, McCarthy connected with wide receiver Jalen Nailor on a back-shoulder throw with Lions cornerback Arthur Maulet in pretty good coverage for a 16-yard gain and a game-clinching first down.
