RECAP: Lions at Vikings

MINNEAPOLIS – For a second time this season, the Detroit Lions' offense had few answers for Minnesota's pressure, made costly turnovers and had critical penalties at inopportune times, which all contributed to the Lions falling 23-10 on the road on Christmas.

Detroit committed six turnovers, five by quarterback Jared Goff (two interceptions, three fumbles) and had another lost fumble by running back Jahmyr Gibbs.

The win gives the Vikings the season sweep against the Lions, who fall to 8-8 and are officially eliminated from playoff contention. Detroit needed to win their last two games and have Green Bay lose their last two to get in. It will be the first time since 2022 the Lions haven't represented the NFC in the playoffs.

Detroit's defense played well most of the afternoon against a depleted Vikings offense starting third-string quarterback Max Brosmer but they gave up a critical 65-yard touchdown run late that was a backbreaker for Detroit. The Lions' defense recorded six sacks – two each by Aidan Hutchinson and Al-Quadin Muhammad – and only allowed 161 total yards of offense in the loss. Minnesota took advantage of short fields and popped that big run late that proved to be the difference.

Detroit's only touchdown of the contest was a 4-yard touchdown catch by rookie wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa in the waning moments of the second quarter that capped off a 19-play, 80-yard scoring drive that saw Detroit convert 3rd & 16, 3rd & 9, 3rd & 15, 4th & 1 and 4th-and-goal (from 4). Jake Bates added a fourth quarter 48-yard field goal.

QB comparison: Goff finished the game 18-of-29 passing with one touchdown, two interceptions and a 64.9 passer rating. He was sacked five times and lost three fumbles.

Brosmer completed just nine of his 16 pass attempts on the afternoon for 51 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. He finished with a 62.2 passer rating and was sacked six times.

Big moment: Detroit had just pulled to within 13-10 with four minutes and 44 seconds left and needed a big stop to give the ball back to the offense for a chance to tie the game or take the lead late.

Instead, a Lions' defense that had been stingy all afternoon allowed a 65-yard Jordan Addison touchdown run on a jet sweep with just under four minutes left that proved to be the dagger in Detroit's comeback hopes.

Key stat: It's tough to win a football game in the NFL losing the turnover battle 6-0. Five Goff turnovers (two interceptions, three fumbles) and a Gibbs fumble were way too much for the Lions to overcome Sunday. The six Lions turnovers are the most in a game this season.

Star performer: Hutchinson recorded his ninth career multi-sack game recording two sacks Thursday to bring his season total to a career-high 13.5 on the season. Hutchinson also chipped in six tackles, three quarterback hits and two tackles for loss.

Injury report: Safety Thomas Harper left the game in the first half to be evaluated for a concussion and did not return. Linebacker Alex Anzalone also left to be evaluated for a concussion in the third quarter and did not return.

Up next: at Chicago (11-4), TBD
