RECAP: Lions at Commanders

LANDOVER, Md. – The Detroit Lions got touchdowns from Jahmyr Gibbs (3), Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams as their offense was on point Sunday afternoon, propelling them to a 44-22 win over the Washington Commanders. The win improves Detroit's record to 6-3 on the season.

The Lions scored on all seven possessions the first-team offense was in the game for (five touchdowns & two field goals), building a 25-point second-half lead Washington couldn't overcome. Lions punter Jack Fox did not punt in the game as backup quarterback Kyle Allen led a field goal drive late in the fourth quarter for Detroit's final points.

The Lions' offense racked up 546 total yards with 226 of those coming on the ground as they got back to their high scoring, big play ways.

Gibbs ended the afternoon rushing for 142 yards on 15 carries (9.5 avg.) with touchdown runs of 43 and 13 yards and a 14-yard touchdown catch. Sunday was Gibbs' fourth game producing both a rushing and receiving touchdown. He now trails only Barry Sanders (5) for the most in franchise history.

Williams was Detroit's leading receiver in the contest, finishing with 119 receiving yards on six receptions with a touchdown.

QB comparison: Lions quarterback Jared Goff was sharp all game, completing 25 of his 33 pass attempts for 320 yards with three touchdowns, no interceptions and a 135.9 passer rating. The three touchdown passes gives Goff 20 on the season, the second most through nine games in team history (Bobby Layne, 24, 1954).

Commanders quarterback Marcus Mariota was 16-of-22 passing for 213 yards with two touchdowns, no interceptions and a 133.3 rating. He also rushed five times for 22 yards.

Key moment: The Lions won the coin toss and deferred receiving the kickoff until the second half. It allowed Detroit an opportunity to double dip on the scoreboard at the end of the first half and with the first possession of the second half.

Following a late second-quarter touchdown by Washington to trim Detroit's lead to 22-10 with a little more than three minutes left in the half, Detroit put together a 13-play, 64-yard drive taking up three minutes and 28 seconds, culminating with a 22-yard Jake Bates field goal to push the lead to 25-10.

The Lions received the second-half kick and drove 72 yards on just five plays, capped off by a 14-yard Williams touchdown and flip into the end zone. It was a 10-point swing to give Detroit a 32-10 lead without Washington touching the football.

Impact stat: Detroit came into the game ranked 25th converting on third down this season at just 36.3 percent. It's been one of the few areas Detroit's struggled offensively this season.

They were much better on third down against Washington, converting 5-of-10 attempts. Detroit was also 2-for-2 on fourth down attempts so two of those missed third-down conversions were rewarded with first-down plays on fourth down.

As a result of their improved play on third and fourth down, Detroit was able to run 68 plays in the contest.

Big performances: Gibbs obviously had a monster day with three touchdowns, and Detroit utilized Williams' speed on a number of crossing routes throughout the game, including a 41-yard catch and run in the third quarter that set up his 14-yard touchdown on a similar crosser. Williams produced his fifth career 100-yard receiving game.

Injury report: Starting cornerback Terrion Arnold left the game in the second quarter (concussion) and did not return.

Right tackle Penei Sewell and center Graham Glasgow left the game briefly in the first half but both returned to the game.
