Hutchinson looking to carry camp momentum into Week 1

Aidan Hutchinson has been downright dominant for the Detroit Lions over the last month of training camp.

He looks to have picked up right where he left off last season when he was leading the NFL in sacks and quarterback pressures and was a favorite to win DPOY before breaking his leg Week 6 in Dallas and missing the rest of the season.

But Hutchinson doesn't believe he's just picked up where he left off last season when he had 45 pressures and 7.5 sacks in just five games. Hutchinson thinks he's even better.

"Ultimately, as a player, I think I've grown and I'm going to continue to grow every year," he said. "I feel like I'm in a really good spot right now. I'm just trying to carry all this momentum to Week 1 and stay hot throughout the whole season."

With Hutchinson on the field, Detroit's defense is an entirely different beast. Just the attention offenses have to give to him in terms of double teams, chips, and overall attention opens things up for so many others on that unit. His presence alone makes a huge impact, then factor in he's one of the best pure pass rushers in the NFL.

One player Hutchinson thinks has the potential for a monster season is Marcus Davenport on the other edge. Davenport has looked good in camp and together they've given Detroit's offensive tackles all they can handle over the last month.

We only got to see Hutchinson and Davenport play together for one full game last season, a Week 1 win over the Los Angeles Rams. Both players had a sack and four quarterback hits in the contest. Davenport missed the next game with a groin injury and then Week 3 in Arizona he was lost for the season with a tricep injury.

"I think it can be really dangerous," Hutchinson said of a healthy duo all season of him and Davenport. "I'm putting everything into his longevity, too. I'm trying to help him out and be there for him in whatever way I can.

"I feel like having another year with him, we've gotten way closer. We've gotten way closer as a D-line, too. But me and Marcus, when we're out there, it's great. It's a lot of fun."

After watching Hutchinson every day in camp over the last month, it's easy to think he can make another run at All-Pro and maybe even a run at Defensive MVP. As a pair, Hutchinson and Davenport have a chance to be one of Detroit's better edge pairings in some time, if both can stay healthy and on the field together.
