TWENTYMAN: Training camp Day 16 observations

Wet conditions: A storm system rolled through Southeast Michigan Tuesday morning and Lions head coach Dan Campbell saw it as a great opportunity to bring the team outside and practice in the elements. It was good to get work in the wet conditions, especially for the offensive skill positions. It's inevitable that the Lions will play an outdoor game in rainy conditions this season. We did see more drops from pass catchers than usual, which will be good teaching points for coaches.

Catch of the day: Rookie wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa had a one-on-one rep with veteran cornerback D.J. Reed early in practice and TeSlaa made a terrific over the shoulder catch right at the pylon of the end zone with Reed in pretty good coverage. Even Reed couldn't believe the catch as he looked over at TeSlaa and asked him if he really caught it.

Back at practice: Second-year defensive lineman Mekhi Wingo came off the PUP list and returned to practice in a limited capacity. Tight end Sam LaPorta worked his way back into practice after missing a couple weeks with an undisclosed injury. It was also good to see safety Morice Norris Jr. back working off to the side of practice with trainers.

Nice day for Vaki: Second-year running back Sione Vaki has made a nice impact since returning from injury. He had a good preseason outing vs. Miami last week and I thought he had a nice practice Tuesday. He had a big run getting outside and down the left sideline in a team period where the offense was backed up along their own goal line. He had another touchdown run in a late situational team period. Detroit has to feel really good about their running back position with Jahmyr Gibbs, David Montgomery, Craig Reynolds and Vaki as the top four.

Back-and-forth: I thought the first-team offense and first-team defense got some really good work in Tuesday in team periods in the rain. It was a back-and-forth kind of practice all morning. The defense did a nice job getting the offense off the field on the first team period, forcing an incompletion to wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown on a 3rd & 6 play because of their rush.

The next team period the offense found the end zone on a nice pitch and catch from quarterback Jared Goff to tight end Shane Zylstra. St. Brown had a nice touchdown grab against cornerback Terrion Arnold on the next rep between the two units. It was like that all afternoon with both sides having their good moments. It was arguably one of the more competitive practices of camp between the offense and defense.

Depth: Lions head coach Dan Campbell mixed it up a little bit Tuesday and had the first-team offense and defense go against the reserves in one team period. It took just two plays for the offensive reserves to score from the 25-yard line against the No. 1 defense. Reynolds had a nice 10-yard run to start and then quarterback Hendon Hooker hit wide receiver Jakobie Keeney-James for a touchdown.

Goff and the offensive starters got a field goal in their rep against the second-team defense. It was a great snapshot of the depth the Lions have on both sides of the ball with playmakers up and down the roster not just on the first teams.

Situational football: Quarterback Kyle Allen and the second-team offense were given the ball at their own 42-yard line trailing 27-20 with one minute and six seconds on the clock and one timeout. Allen put together an 11-play drive doing a great job managing the clock. He converted a 4th & 10 to wide receiver Tom Kennedy for a first down and won the drill for the offense by hitting wide receiver Tim Patrick in the back the end zone as time expired. Allen has been impressive throughout camp.

Situational football II: Goff and the starters on offense were given the ball at the 49-yard line trailing 24-21 with 54 seconds on the clock and just one timeout. Safety Erick Hallett had a great pass defense on St. Brown to start the period. Reed also had a pass defense and after a short completion to tight end Brock Wright, the defense won the period when Goff's pass to St. Brown on 4th & 4 sailed high.
