TWENTYMAN: Week 14 observations

Putting it in Goff's hands: Lions head coach Dan Campbell said the game plan coming in was to put the ball in quarterback Jared Goff’s hands with Dallas having the league's 30th-ranked pass defense coming in. Detroit threw it 34 times vs. rushing 22 times. Goff finished completing 25 of his 34 pass attempts on the night for 309 yards with one touchdown, no interceptions and a 111.0 passer rating. Another stellar performance from Goff when the Lions needed it most in a 44-30 win.

Complementary ball: Linebacker Jack Campbell had a sack and near safety on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott midway through the first quarter Thursday. After review, it was determined the ball was outside the goal line when Prescott was first contacted. Dallas was forced to punt from their half-yard-line and Detroit got great field position at the Dallas 42 as a result.

Six plays later, they were in the end zone on a 1-yard touchdown run by Jahmyr Gibbs. Detroit would have loved the two points and the football but scoring a touchdown there was huge, taking advantage of a great defensive series.

Gibbs keeps climbing: With three touchdowns Thursday, Gibbs now has 13 touchdowns on the season and 47 for his career, which ties Barry Sanders for the most by a player in their first three seasons in the league in NFL history. Gibbs is so dynamic in space that he reminds me of a basketball player with elite quickness who buckles knees and makes defenders reach for air. Gibbs had 120 scrimmage yards and three touchdowns as he continues to make a case for being the most dangerous running back in football.

Offensive line play: It was a little bit of a rough start for Detroit's offensive line allowing a sack and five hits on Goff in the first quarter, but credit to those guys upfront as Goff was hit just three times the rest of the game and wasn't sacked again. They really settled in.

Rookie debut: Miles Frazier (6-6, 325) made his Lions debut Thursday working in at left guard along with veteran Trystan Colon. Detroit's fifth-round pick in this year's NFL Draft, Frazier missed training camp and the start of the regular season rehabbing a knee injury. Detroit scored their first touchdown on Frazier's first drive in.

Campbell said after the game the plan was to work him in and he earned more reps with his play. He did have two false start penalties he'll have to clean up moving forward.

Gutty performance: Amon-Ra St. Brown left the Packers game on Thanksgiving with an ankle injury and didn't return. The injury forced him to miss practice all week ahead of Thursday's game against Dallas and he was listed as questionable to play against the Cowboys.

St. Brown played a full complement of reps and ended up catching six passes for 92 yards including a few clutch receptions on third downs to set up scores. He now gets 10 days to heal up before the Lions travel to Los Angeles to take on the Rams Dec. 14.

Impact plays: Linebacker Jack Campbell joined Chris Spielman as the only players with at least 110 tackles and 5.0 sacks in a season in franchise history. Campbell got his fifth sack on that near safety in the first quarter. He also had a forced fumble in the second quarter that was recovered by safety Brian Branch and turned into a David Montgomery 35-yard touchdown run. Campbell finished Thursday's game with 12 tackles, one sack, one quarterback hit, a tackle for loss and a forced fumble.

Special teams impact: How good has Tom Kennedy been as a punt and kickoff returner the last couple weeks? Kennedy had two 40-plus-yard kickoff returns against the Cowboys and totaled 120 kickoff return yards on three returns. He also had a 21-yard punt return. Detroit's coverage units were also solid all evening with second-year linebacker Trevor Nowaske notching three tackles on teams and running back Sione Vaki having two.
