Conklin's motivation 'at an all-time high' after signing in Detroit

From 2021 to 2024 veteran tight end Tyler Conklin caught 61, 58, 61 and 51 passes, respectively, for the Minnesota Vikings and New York Jets. It was the most productive stretch of the Chesterfield native's NFL career.

Those numbers dipped last year (just seven receptions) playing in a Los Angeles Chargers offense that used Conklin in more of a reserve and blocking role.

He is hoping to get back to the kind of production he enjoyed in that four-year stretch after signing a one-year contract with the Detroit Lions last week.

"Obviously, things didn't go the way anyone wanted them to in LA for whatever those reasons were and now I feel very blessed to be here and with the opportunity here," Conklin said Tuesday. "Great room with Sam (LaPorta) and Brock (Wright). Really good football players. Offense that values their tight ends. All around explosive offense.

"I think I can definitely be very productive in the pass game still. Just because one situation didn't quite work out the way anyone wanted doesn't mean you can't do it anymore. But at the end of the day, I'm just here to compete to the best of my ability and help this team in whatever way I can help this team."

Conklin attended L'Anse Creuse North High School and began his college career in 2013 as a basketball player at Northwood University. He elected to walk on to Central Michigan University's football team in 2014, eventually earning a scholarship and a starting role in 2016. After two seasons as a starter, Conklin was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the fifth round (No. 157 overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft.

During his first two seasons in Minnesota, Conklin crossed paths with current Lions offensive coordinator Drew Petzing, who was coaching quarterbacks and wide receivers at the time. Over his four-year career with the Vikings, Conklin played in 64 games (21 starts) and saw his role increase every year. He recorded 61 receptions for 593 yards and three touchdowns for the Vikings in 2021.

Conklin joined the Jets in 2022 where he started 43 games and caught 170 passes for 1,622 yards and seven touchdowns over three seasons.

Conklin is an experienced veteran with some versatility to his game, which should fit perfectly in Detroit.

"Definitely my motivation is at an all-time high," Conklin said of returning home to play in Michigan and to be part of an explosive offense in Detroit. "I have no idea what my role will be but I can tell you just coming here, I plan on being the best version of myself as a football player and as a person and just want to help this team however I got to help this team in whatever capacity and whatever role that is."

LaPorta was the Lions' second-leading receiver last season until he suffered a back injury Nov. 9 and missed the remainder of the season. Wright was tasked with filling the void but he injured his trachea and missed the final six games of the season.

The Lions' offense under Petzing should be multiple and creative, and could look to feature more two and three tight end sets. Conklin's addition now adds a third veteran tight end to mix with a track record of production playing in 127 career games (69 starts) with 270 receptions.
