McCreary describes his playing style as 'instinctive & aggressive'

After spending three and a half seasons in Tennessee and winning just 17 games over that span, cornerback Roger McCreary was traded to the Los Angeles Rams at last year's deadline and played a reserve role for the Rams through their run to the NFC Championship Game.

It was McCreary's first taste of playoff football. He said Monday after signing a one-year contract with Detroit that joining a playoff contender was his biggest priority in free agency.

"That's my first time ever playing in the playoffs, so I felt it was great for me," McCreary said. "People always say the game speed is different from the regular season and it definitely is. I was excited just to play in that atmosphere, and I feel like having that experience can help you in a lot of ways knowing how the game develops and how people attack you when it comes down to the wire. I felt like it was great for me to experience that and I look forward experiencing that even more.

"I want to be part of something that's a winning culture and I feel like that's the vibe here."

McCreary, 26, was drafted in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft (No. 35 overall) by the Titans. He started all 17 games as a rookie playing both outside and nickel. He transitioned to mostly playing the slot in 2023 with 11 starts and then mostly a reserve role in 2024 and 2025.

McCreary said Detroit's giving him an opportunity to compete for the starting nickel job and for a role on the outside.

"Any position they need me at," he said. "I know I play a lot of nickel, corner but I feel like I can play either position and that's the mindset I'm going into."

The Lions have an immediate opening on their defense at the nickel cornerback spot after Amik Robertson left in free agency.

McCreary, fellow free-agent signee Christian Izien and returning third-year cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. could all be in the mix to fill that role.

McCreary has played in 61 career games with 38 starts under his belt.

"I would say my playing style is instinctive and aggressive," he said. "At corner, you have to be more than just a coverage guy. The other side of that is just me being aggressive.

"I feel like setting an edge, tackling, filling the gaps and disrupting the ball and everything is my playing style and that's what stands out the most."
