Week 4 opponent: What the Browns are saying

What are the Cleveland Browns talking about ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field?

1. The Browns come into Sunday's matchup No. 1 in the NFL against the run, allowing teams on average just 57.3 yards per game on the ground through the first three weeks of the season. But Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said it really doesn't matter what they've done before Sunday because Detroit's scheme poses such a new and difficult challenge for his defense.

"They've got good blockers upfront and on the perimeter with their receivers," he said. "Their receivers are always freeing up guys with extra blocks down the field, which is really impressive."

He said adding Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery to the mix allows Detroit to run every run style and scheme there is and that's what makes preparing for Detroit's run game so unique from his perspective.

2. Asked about Detroit's defense and the fact that they are coming off a contest Monday night in which they sacked Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson seven times, Browns quarterback Joe Flacco said the thing that jumps out about Detroit's unit as a whole is just the physicality in which they play the game at all three levels.

"They understand that's what wins football games," Flacco said. "For us as an offense, we have to understand we're going to be in for that kind of game."

3. Stefanski said it will be really important to find a way to get some explosives in either the run or pass game offensively. When there are opportunities in the pass game, Stefanski said they are going to do a better job taking those shots and letting their playmakers win their battles. Cleveland has just six pass plays of 20-plus yards on the season with zero 20-plus-yard touchdowns.

4. Browns linebacker Carson Schwesinger said one of the big points of emphasis this week is defenders being really disciplined with their eyes facing a Lions' offense that gives a defense a lot of eye candy before the snap. He said having good communication among all three levels of the defense is really going to be imperative.

5. Stefanski talked about Detroit's offense not just having a ton of skilled players but also having a scheme that perfectly matches the personnel.

"I think coach (John) Morton does a great job with that group. Shift, motion, different playmakers they can get the ball to whether in the run game between the tackles, outside the tackles, screens, play actions and trick plays," he said. "So, you have to be ready for it all."

Stefanski said the core of what Detroit does both offensively and defensively is still the same despite the addition of two new coordinators in Morton and Kelvin Sheppard.

6. This will be a little bit of a different game defensively for the Browns Sunday, according to Schwesinger, because they know going in that Detroit's going to go for it on fourth down more than most teams. It could change how Cleveland has to approach third downs based on the down, distance and point of the field they're at.

7. When sitting down and studying Lions quarterback Jared Goff ahead of the matchup, Stefanski said the one thing that jumped out to him was just how smart Goff is and how much the Lions put on his plate at the line of scrimmage in terms of pre-snap decisions and checks.

"He's outstanding," Stefanski said of Goff.

8. What stands out about Detroit's defense to veteran wide receiver Jerry Jeudy?

Jeudy complimented the defensive line and said that the secondary plays complementary football in the backend, but he does see opportunities one-on-one to make some plays for their pass catchers.

"They have a good amount of trust in their corners and they give them a lot of man," he said. "Just got to take advantage of that, winning routes, getting your depth, getting open and being where you need to be on time."

Jeudy said the offense knows they have to put up more than the 13 points it took to beat the Green Bay Packers last week if they expect to beat the Lions in Detroit Sunday.
