Campbell talks 2026 roster construction: Getting younger, leadership roles & more

PHOENIX – Draft. Develop. Re-sign.

That's the roster construction method Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell implemented Day 1 of arriving on the job in 2021.

The success of the draft and develop part early in their tenure has already led to the re-signing of tackle Penei Sewell, wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson, safety Kerby Joseph, linebacker Derrick Barnes and defensive lineman Alim McNeill. Veteran quarterback Jared Goff, who was acquired in a trade in 2021, has since become one of the top quarterbacks in the league and has signed an extension with the team.

Linebacker Jack Campbell, running back Jahmyr Gibbs, safety Brian Branch and tight end Sam LaPorta are all core players up for extensions either this year or next.

Detroit is in an enviable position with their quarterback in place and several Pro Bowl caliber players in their prime as their young core.

The one drawback as Dan Campbell sees it is the financial constraint when it comes to free agency and building around their core that's forced them to be more selective in adding veterans. They've also had to move on from some of their veteran glue pieces.

"I felt like we needed to get younger in some areas," Campbell said Monday at the NFC coaches breakfast during the Annual League Meetings. "That's just the nature of this league. We had some really good production from these players that we really counted on, and those guys helped us a lot.

"It's hard. It's hard to lose guys like Alex and Decker and Kalif and (Al-Quadin) Muhammad. Those guys have been really good. But that's the nature of the beast, too. That's kind of where we're at in the next kind of phase of this."

It's up to Campbell and Holmes to now identify the next group of players who can complement and fit around the core pieces they've developed and extended. Campbell said that's been the exciting part about this offseason so far with next month's NFL Draft the next step in the process.

Players stepping up and filling leadership roles is also part of this next phase of the roster building process.

"I'm putting my eggs in the basket of Penei Sewell in that O-line room. He's the leader," Campbell said. "I'm putting my eggs in the basket of Jack Campbell in the linebacker room. Like, it's time. These guys weren't just good football players coming out of college that fit us. These guys had leadership qualities.

"Don't be something you're not, but we felt these are the guys, whether it's vocal or it's just lead by example, these are guys that people will follow and are about what we're about. To me, we might be taking the handcuffs off some of these guys. It's time for these guys to grow and take ownership of this and I think it's actually going to help us."
