TWENTYMAN: Breaking down the Lions' remaining games

The Detroit Lions get a week off thanks to their bye to rest and heal up after Monday night's 24-9 win over Tampa Bay. Teams typically like their bye week to fall somewhere in the middle of the season and Week 8 for Detroit is about perfect, especially with some players battling through injury and others closing in on a return.

Following is a breakdown of Detroit's 10-game stretch coming out of their Week 8 bye:

Week 9 vs. Minnesota Vikings

Detroit will be well rested coming off their bye week and hopefully getting back a few reinforcements on defense. The Lions have won their last five against Minnesota and their last four vs. the Vikings at Ford Field.

Twentyman: Division games mean more, and this is a chance for the Lions to improve to 2-1 in the NFC North with wins over Chicago and Minnesota after a Week 1 loss in Green Bay. This is an aggressive Vikings defense with the fourth highest blitz percentage in the NFL.

Week 10 at Washington Commanders

The Lions last played the Commanders on the road back in 2019. This is a chance for Detroit to exact a bit of revenge on the Commanders for their 45-31 win in Detroit in the Divisional playoffs last year that ended Detroit's season.

Twentyman: The Commanders have scored the seventh most points in football through Week 7 but rank in the bottom 10 in the league in points allowed. Can the Lions do a better job of limiting Commanders second-year quarterback Jayden Daniels than they did in the playoffs last season?

Week 11 at Philadelphia Eagles

A primetime matchup between NFC heavyweights in a contest that could have significant playoff implications at the end of the season.

Twentyman: The defending Super Bowl champions have arguably the most complete roster in football on both sides of the ball. Detroit will need to play a complementary brand of football in all three phases to secure a tough road victory.

Week 12 vs. New York Giants

The Giants are playing a much better brand of football since turning to rookie Jaxson Dart at quarterback and giving rookie running back Cam Skattebo the bulk of the carries in the backfield.

Twentyman: While the Giants are playing much better offensively, their defense has allowed the fifth most passing yards and sixth most rushing yards in the NFL through Week 7. The Lions should be able to put up points on Ford Field's fast track.

Week 13 vs. Green Bay Packers

This will mark the 23rd meeting between these two division rivals on Thanksgiving. Detroit last beat the Packers on Thanksgiving in 2013 (40-10).

Twentyman: The Lions left Green Bay Week 1 feeling like they beat themselves due to communication issues and missed assignments. They get a shot to even the season series with Green Bay in a key NFC North matchup right before the stretch run in December. Detroit's looking to make it two wins in a row on Thanksgiving.

Week 14 vs. Dallas Cowboys

This has the makings of a really fun matchup pitting two offenses that currently rank No. 2 (Dallas) and No. 3 (Detroit) in total offense and scoring offense through Week 7.

Twentyman: These two offenses can move up and down the field and score points. Which defense finds a way to make the key stop or get the key takeaway? That could be the difference in this one.

Week 15 at Los Angeles Rams

Detroit's only west coast trip of the season is against quarterback Matthew Stafford and a talented Rams team.

Twentyman: This is probably the most disruptive defensive front the Lions will face all season. Los Angeles' 26.0 sacks on the year are second only to Denver (34.0).

Week 16 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Former division rival quarterback Aaron Rodgers returns to Detroit. Can the Lions close out their regular season home slate with a sweep of the AFC North?

Twentyman: Rodgers will be 42 years old at kickoff for this one and is still playing some pretty good football with a passer rating of 105.0 with 14 touchdowns and five interceptions through Week 7.

Week 17 at Minnesota Vikings

Detroit closes out the regular season with two division road games starting with a Christmas Day matchup on Netflix in front of a national audience.

Twentyman: These late-season games against the Vikings have meant so much the last couple years as Detroit has clinched their last two division titles with wins over the Vikings late in the year. U.S. Bank stadium has one of the best atmospheres in football and is a tough place to play. What will be on the line for both teams Week 17?

Week 18 at Chicago Bears

January football in Chicago. Wind and weather could certainly play a factor as Chicago tries to avenge a 31-point defeat in Detroit Week 2.

Twentyman: This is a much-improved Bears team that has rolled off four straight wins. Can they keep it rolling and be serious playoff contenders Week 18? This matchup could be fun if playoff bids and seeding are at stake to end the regular season.
