Week 10 opponent: What the Commanders are saying

What are the Washington Commanders talking about ahead of their Week 10 matchup at Northwest Stadium against the Detroit Lions Sunday afternoon?

1. Commanders head coach Dan Quinn confirmed that quarterback Jayden Daniels dislocated his left elbow in the loss to Seattle Sunday night. Quinn said there is no timetable for his return, but he will be out Sunday and for the foreseeable future. Wide receiver/returner Luke McCaffrey broke his collarbone against the Seahawks and will be out vs. Detroit as well. Defensively, cornerback Marshon Lattimore suffered a torn ACL and is done for the season.

"Tough night on the injury front," Quinn told Washington media this week. "All three guys were absolutely elite competitors, and they mean a ton to our team for their play style and what they represent."

2. Linebacker Bobby Wagner has been a part of teams in the past that have gotten off to slow starts like the Commanders are currently experiencing. Those teams were able to get out of it by getting a win and turning that into a streak to get right back into the thick of the playoff race. That's the mindset he said he's tried to instill in his teammates this week starting on the practice field with the message to focus only on Detroit and what it will take to beat the Lions Sunday.

"A lot of it is just belief, man," Wagner said. "Doing the work. A lot of times doing the work takes care of a lot of stuff."

3. Linebacker Jordan Magee was asked about the preparation this week in the defensive meeting room facing Detroit's dynamic running back tandem of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. Magee acknowledged it's a good tandem in Detroit with Gibbs' speed and Montgomery's downhill style, but he also said he has a lot of confidence in their front seven on defense and believes they'll be able to limit Gibbs, Montgomery and the Lions' rushing attack.

4. The Commanders are dealing with injuries at wide receiver and aren't expected to have Terry McLaurin available Sunday vs. Detroit. Washington has been the fourth-best rushing team in the NFL this season and hope they can use that strength to give them opportunities in the pass game against Detroit Sunday.

"Sometimes the play pass that can come off the run game has to be where you make your mark," Quinn said. "There can be sometimes where a one-yard run or two-yard run … the byproduct of that is the linebacker and the safety coming downhill. Can you get a play pass behind them? That's the balance of playing first and second down football. The more effective you run play action, should be a little bit more effective, but you have to take the shots in the run game to do that."

5. Linebacker Frankie Luvu talked Wednesday about his original suspension for Sunday's game against Detroit being reduced to a $100,000 fine with the ability to now play Sunday. Luvu was originally suspended for a violation of the rule against hip-drop tackles.

"Weight off my shoulders," he said Wednesday. "My teammates know who I am. People that know me and the people around me know who I am as a player and person. None of my intentions are to get out there and try to hurt somebody. I try to play the game the right way and control what I can control. I can't control what other people think about it, whoever leaves it up to their hands to make a decision if I can play or not play."

6. Washington will have to mix and match a little bit at cornerback Sunday with Lattimore out. Jonathan Jones and Mike Sainristil both have inside/outside flex, per Quinn, and some of it could be matchup based per series vs. Detroit.

Washington ranks 28th in total defense (377.8) and 29th against the pass (253.6) with five interceptions this season.
