TIM AND MIKE: Minicamp Day 2 observations

Return men: The Lions are still very much on the lookout for someone to emerge as a return man in both the punt and kickoff games. The Lions have rotated players in and out at both spots this spring, and the real competition for those jobs begins in training camp. But the team spent a lot of time on kickoff return today, and Dwayne Washington, TJ Jones and Keshawn Martin worked exclusively as kickoff return men. – Tim Twentyman

One for the D: Most passing drills favor receivers because they have space to operate, and there's no help for the defensive backs. Quandre Diggs didn't need help – except from the sideline – in covering a deep route by Marvin Jones Jr.. Diggs caught a long ball meant for Jones over his shoulder in the end zone. Diggs was close to being out of bounds – and actually might have been – but that didn't detract from the good catch he made. – *Mike O'Hara

Top 3: The Lions are working off a "rep chart" and not a "depth chart" in minicamp, but Golden Tate, Marvin Jones Jr. and TJ Jones continue to get most of the first-team reps at receiver. TJ Jones put a pretty sick shimmy on Darius Slay in an individual drill on Wednesday that resulted in Jones being wide open to make a catch. – Tim Twentyman

High and Low: Rookie tight end Robert Tonyan of Indiana State experienced both on one play. He made a good catch, and a good move after the catch to get extra yards. Unfortunately, the play ended when he had the ball punched out from behind. The catch and move will be remembered, though. – Mike O'Hara

Ebron back-to-back: Tight end Eric Ebron had a couple back-to-back nice plays in 7-on-7. He got a step on safety Tavon Wilson down the left sideline, and Stafford put it right in his hands for a big play. On the very next rep, Ebron reached out and snagged a ball over the middle that was away from his body. – Tim Twentyman

Practice report: Running back Mike James, receiver Jared Abbrederis and linebacker Antwione Williams joined the list of players not taking part in practice Wednesday. That list also includes Don Carey, Armonty Bryant, T.J. Lang, Tahir Whitehead, Corey Robinson, Theo Riddick, Taylor Decker and Jeremiah Valoaga. – Tim Twentyman
