TIM AND MIKE: Lions-Colts Day 2 practice observations

QB scare: There was a moment of concern midway through practice when Matthew Stafford came up limping. He flexed his knee several times, but it proved to be no big deal. Stafford confirmed after practice that he and Ameer Abdullah had bumped knees. "Friendly fire,'" Stafford said. – Mike O'Hara

Good work: Lions head coach Jim Caldwell said after Friday's practice that the last two days were invaluable in terms of evaluating his players, especially some of the young ones. Guys were put in uncomfortable situations against players they weren't used to and hadn't schemed against. It should give coaches two great days of film to evaluate. Some weaknesses were exposed and coaching points gained. – *Tim Twentyman

QB sub: Veteran guard T.J. Lang did not participate in either of the two practices, but he was more than a spectator. When the offensive linemen were doing the pass protection drill against the Colts' defensive linemen Friday, Lang stood at the quarterback position and took snaps in the shotgun formation. Is a name change in order to T.J. Layne? – Mike O'Hara

Impressed: I thought receivers Kenny Golladay and TJ Jones had two pretty good days of work in Indy. They both had at least one drop that I saw, but there was way more good than bad with both guys. They'll be two players to watch come Sunday's preseason opener. - Tim Twentyman

Not as impressed: During offensive and defensive line pass-rush drills, I noted the Colts offensive line winning a majority of their one-on-one battles with the Lions defensive line. Colts blockers were disciplined, had great hand placement and anchored well. There weren't a lot of win on Detroit's side. – Tim Twentyman

Play of the 2 days:Defensive tackle Haloti Ngata is still an imposing physical presence as he enters his 12th pro season and third as a Lion. He's big, strong and quick. On one play, he got downfield to pursue a running back who'd cut back. More impressive was a play when he used one arm to ward off a blocker and knocked him flat on his back. – Mike O'Hara

TJ Jones made a terrific one-handed grab on a Matthew Stafford pass in a team drill Friday. The great thing about it was Jones didn't lose any momentum at all. He reached his hand up, snagged the ball and kept on going for a nice gain. - *Tim Twentyman *
