RECAP: Lions vs. Chargers

Canton, Ohio – The Detroit Lions couldn't overcome early mistakes that turned into a quick 14-0 hole as they dropped their preseason opener to the Los Angles Chargers, 34-7, in the annual Hall of Fame Game.

Detroit fumbled the opening kickoff that led to a Chargers touchdown. Los Angeles scored again soon after following a Kyle Allen interception that was returned 60 yards to Detroit's 6-yard line that turned into another touchdown on a second short field for the offense.

The Lions turned the ball over five times total in the contest and generated just 197 yards of total offense.

Detroit's only points on the night came in the second quarter on a 3-yard Craig Reynolds touchdown run.

QB comparison: Allen and Hendon Hooker are competing to be Jared Goff’s backup at quarterback.

Allen got the start Thursday night and played the entire first half, completing 9-of-14 passes for 91 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions. His first interception was returned 60 yards to the Lions' 6-yard line and led to a score. His second was in the Chargers' end zone taking points off the board.

The second half was all Hooker's, and he finished completing three of his six attempts for 18 yards with no touchdowns and an interception. He added nine rushing yards on three attempts.

Rookie report: First-year wide receivers Isaac TeSlaa (third-round pick) and Dominic Lovett (seventh) made their presence known pretty early Thursday.

TeSlaa got the offense rolling on their third possession of the game making back-to-back 24- and 22-yard receptions to take the Lions from their own 23-yard line to the Chargers' 31-yard line. The drive ended in an Allen interception.

Lovett had five catches for 31 yards, including a critical fourth-down grab on Detroit's first-half scoring drive. He also had a 19-yard punt return and a 22-yard kickoff return.

Sixth-round edge rusher Ahmed Hassanein got quite a few reps rotating in along the edge of Detroit's defensive front and finished with four tackles.

Injury report: Tight end Kenny Yeboah injured his right leg at the end of the third quarter and was attended to on the field by trainers. He left under his own power and returned to the contest.
