Lions head coach Dan Campbell spoke to the media Monday following Detroit's 19-16 walk-off win in Chicago Sunday that ended their season on a good note as Detroit finishes the year 9-8.
Campbell said it's going to be a hard pill to swallow watching the NFL playoffs starting next week, but he said it's important for the coaches and players to watch to make sure it lights a flame and creates an intense drive to get back there in 2026.
What is task No. 1 for Campbell this offseason?
Players had their exit interviews and physicals Monday and cleaned out their lockers as the finality of the 2025 season set in around the Meijer Performance Center.
Campbell said he needs 'a few days' before starting the deep dive into how to get this team back in the playoffs in 2026. He said first on that list is figuring out his coaching staff.
"Well, the first thing I've got to figure out is the staff," he said. "Where do we go from here? I need to make sure that I feel good about where the guys are at, the positions they're in. Or do we tweak a couple of things, move a couple of guys, do we stay put? Those are the things I've got to sort through, that's the first for me. That's what I've got to get through. And I've got to do some digging here."
Will Campbell call offensive plays in 2026?
He took over play calling from offensive coordinator John Morton starting Week 10 with mixed results the final nine games of the regular season as Detroit finished 4-5 over that stretch.
"I'm open to anything," Campbell said. "I don't know exactly where I'm at with that yet. Listen, I'm going to think through all of that. I really want to do what I feel is best for the team. If I believe that's what's best for us and I feel good about it, I will."
Will going through Frank Ragnow's retirement last offseason prepare them better if the same thing happens with Taylor Decker this offseason?
The short answer is absolutely.
Decker, who battled a shoulder injury and other ailments all season, said after Sunday's win he's contemplating retirement after 10 NFL seasons as injuries have taken a toll and he's started to think about quality of life after football with his family. Campbell said it's only fair to give Decker some time to think about his future, but he and GM Brad Holmes will have a more comprehensive backup plan ready to go if he does retire.
"We're going to obviously have to take note of that, and I know Decker is going to come talk to Brad and myself here either today or tomorrow," Campbell said. "And I know this, whatever goes down there from his perspective, he's going to need some time. He just is. But absolutely we learned lessons. We learned lessons there."
What is the biggest need on the roster as of Jan. 5 according to Campbell?
Campbell and Holmes haven't done their deep dive into the roster just yet - that's taking place in the coming weeks. There are some changes coming, but Campbell said his first thought after the season concluded when thinking about the roster is that more competition is needed at a lot of different spots.
"I really don't believe we're that far off. There's a couple things we can do and I just want to make sure we go after it," Campbell said. "I'm not saying we weren't hungry, but let's get that hunger back. We're going to bring in some guys to compete. We need competition in a lot of areas because that brings out the best in players whether it's with some of the guys here or guys that we bring in. That's how you elevate the roster."

How does Campbell evaluate the injuries that have occurred on the team?
Every team goes through injuries on a yearly basis, but the Lions certainly seem to have dealt with a lot over the last two seasons.
Campbell said Monday the type of injuries they're suffering is what's important in his evaluation of the medical and training staff and anything else related to injuries.
"When you start talking about some of these it's like, 'Man, we looking at soft tissue?' That's where I always start because if you have a major soft tissue issue, it's more than just the player, in my opinion," he said. "There's other factors."
The achilles and ACL injuries and broken bones are more freak things in Campbell's opinion. Campbell changed up the practice schedule going lighter and incorporating walkthroughs, but at the end of the day, he must get his team prepared to play and that takes a certain style of practice he's not willing to compromise moving forward.
"I like our training staff," Campbell said. "I think they do a hell of a job. I really do. It was just a tough year in some areas."
