KEY QUESTIONS: How will Lions use Sunday's loss as fuel moving forward?

Lions head coach Dan Campbell spoke to the media Tuesday for the first time since Sunday night's 30-17 loss to the Chiefs in Kansas City. Here are all the key questions to come out of that media session:

What was Campbell's reaction to safety Brian Branch being suspended one game for his postgame altercation with Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster?

Next man up.

Campbell said Branch will learn from the incident and will be better moving forward because of it but Campbell's focus is on who will be available to play Monday night against a very good Tampa Bay Buccaneers offense.

"He's an outstanding young man," Campbell said of Branch. "He really is. He's got a big heart. He made a mistake, and he'll learn from it."

"He's an outstanding player for us and so it's no different than when you lose guys you really depend on and have high production. The next guy has to step up, serve a role for us and help out and it has to spread throughout the rest of your team. Everyone else has to pull a little bit more of that load."

Branch is appealing his suspension, but Campbell must prepare to face Tampa Bay without him. If the suspension is overturned Campbell said it will be a bonus.

What are the latest injury updates?

The percentage Campbell has associated with Alim McNeill's chances of returning to game action the last two weeks ticked up Tuesday as Detroit's talented defensive lineman could return to the lineup Monday. Campbell said McNeill has looked good in practice the last two weeks.

Detroit could be without All-Pro safety Kerby Joseph who's been dealing with a knee injury. Campbell admitted Sunday wasn't Joseph's most productive game as he was in and out of the lineup dealing with the injury. They will determine this week if he can go Monday night or if two weeks off with the bye coming after the Bucs game will better serve him for the long haul of the season.

Cornerbacks Terrion Arnold (shoulder) and Avonte Maddox (hamstring) could be back after the Week 8 bye, per Campbell. Same goes for edge rusher Marcus Davenport and linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez.

Campbell said the team is looking good health-wise with a lot of players returning from injury in November for the December and January stretch run.

How can the Lions use Sunday's loss as fuel moving forward?

No team ever wants to lose but Campbell mentioned Tuesday that losses tend to give teams more of a sense of urgency and a feeling of wanting to get the bad taste of a loss out of their mouth.

"Sometimes it gives you that extra kick to get things back to where they need to be," he said.

Kansas City is a good football team, and the Lions have a stretch of games against other good teams coming up against Tampa Bay, Minnesota, Washington and Philadelphia over the next four weeks.

"You have to be on point when you play really good teams and that's what I love about the stretch that's coming," Campbell said. "We're about to hit a row of them, right? Your margin for error is so small and that's what I told the team today. That actually fires me up because you have to be on point. You don't get the luxury of making a mistake here and making a mistake there against these types of teams we're getting ready to play."

Campbell said doing all the little things and finding ways to win against good teams is the kind of stuff that gets teams to where they want to be by the end of the year. He thinks it's exactly what they need right now, and he thinks they'll be better for it.

What did Campbell say about Monday's matchup against the 5-1 Bucs, who have the best record in the NFC?

He has a ton of respect for Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield for the way he plays the game and his leadership style. Mayfield can push the ball down the field and make plays with his legs.

"I just think he's playing at a high level," Campbell said. "He's a guy that gives them a chance anytime they're in a game."

Did any aspect of Sunday's game or any individual performance stand out after watching the tape?

"DJ Reader played his tail off that whole game start to finish," Campbell said. "I was really impressed."

Players like Reader and rookie Tyleik Williams don't rack up a lot of stats but they do the dirty work inside so other players can make plays. Reader has had a great start to his season.

Is Campbell happy with the carry distribution between Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery through six games?

Gibbs has 87 carries for 390 yards (4.5 average) with four touchdowns on the year. Montgomery has carried the ball 65 times for 334 yards (5.1) with four touchdowns.

Gibbs is getting more carries early on because he's in the game during the two-minute offense and they've had a lot of those reps early in the year, per Campbell. He said he'd like to get Montgomery more carries moving forward and balance that load a little more evenly.
