TWENTYMAN: Preseason Week 2 observations

Starter treatment: Rookies Tyleik Williams and Tate Ratledge were held out of Detroit's third preseason contest Saturday. All of Detroit's other healthy first-year players, including third-round pick Isaac TeSlaa, took part in the contest. Willliams and Ratledge got in great work in the joint practices this week with Miami. Both Williams and Ratledge are expected to be starters Week 1.

Rookie receivers: For a second straight preseason contest, rookie wide receivers TeSlaa and Jackson Meeks caught touchdown passes from veteran quarterback Kyle Allen. Meeks had an 11-yarder late in the first quarter and TeSlaa had an 18-yarder at the end of the first half. Both players have looked great in camp.

Lions faithful: Lions fans, man. Coaches, players, and people within the organization talk about it all the time - Lions fans are just special. The announced attendance was 47,684 for Saturday's game which is over 70 percent full for a preseason contest with no starters.

Penalty fest: We saw a lot of yellow flags laying on the field Saturday afternoon. Miami finished with nine penalties for 60 yards, while Detroit was flagged 13 times for 86 yards. Campbell said penalties played a big factor in the loss and are something he wants to see cleaned up before next week's preseason finale vs. Houston.

Impact player: Sione Vaki made his biggest mark as a rookie on special teams, leading the team with eight ST tackles last season. The Lions' first punt Saturday was a tackle and forced fumble by Vaki that he nearly recovered. Vaki is hoping to also make an impact on offense as a reserve running back in 2025. On offense, he finished Saturday with 30 yards rushing on five carries (6.0 avg.).

Secondary rotation: Campbell played a ton of different players in the secondary, mixing them in and out of the lineup in a lot of different combinations. One player who stood out to me was safety Erick Hallett II. He defended three passes against the Dolphins and had three sacks. The coaches love his versatility as we've seen him play safety, outside corner, and nickel corner in camp. Players with that kind of versatility are extremely valuable.

Hustle play: Late in the first quarter, Miami completed a short screen pass on 3rd & 12 at the Lions' 37-yard line to wide receiver Dee Eskridge who followed a couple blocks and broke a tackle. He had a clear path to the end zone. Al-Quadin Muhammad came all the way from his edge position on the left side to make the tackle 27 yards downfield at the 10-yard line saving a touchdown. Those kind of effort plays stand out in the film room.

Lynn's performance: Second-year edge rusher Nate Lynn got injured in training camp last year and wasn't able to fully show coaches what he could do. Now healthy, Lynn has had a terrific camp and preseason and is making a case to be part of Detroit's edge depth behind starters Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport. Lynn was leading Detroit with seven pressures through the first two preseason games and then added four tackles and a tackle for loss in Saturday's loss to Miami.

"It's kind of rookie season part two, so to see him kind of take another step here and grow and get a little bit better, it is good," Campbell said of Lynn after the game. "He's – like I said, he's having a pretty good camp."
