RECAP: Lions vs. Dolphins

Recap: The Detroit Lions fell to 1-2 in the preseason after a 24-17 loss Saturday to the Miami Dolphins at Ford Field in front of an impressive preseason crowd of 47,684.

Veteran quarterback Kyle Allen had another strong outing, starting the contest for the Lions. He threw two touchdown passes to rookie wide receivers Isaac TeSlaa and Jackson Meeks for a second straight preseason game.

Meeks finished the afternoon with seven receptions for 93 yards and a touchdown. TeSlaa caught four passes for 41 yards and a touchdown.

Rookie wide receiver Dominic Lovett recovered a muffed punt at the Miami 27-yard line midway through the third quarter that resulted in a Jake Bates 33-yard field goal to conclude the scoring for the Lions.

Miami got touchdown receptions from wide receivers Dee Eskridge and Theo Wease Jr. (2).

QB comparison: Allen was terrific playing the entire first half. He had a couple high throws just off the fingers of TeSlaa and Tom Kennedy early on but then settled in nicely and rattled off nine straight completions across his final two possessions including those two touchdown passes. He finished the day with an impressive stat line of 14-of-17 passing for 124 yards with two touchdowns, no interceptions and a 136.3 passer rating.

Hendon Hooker played the entire second half and finished the afternoon completing six of his 13 pass attempts for 61 yards with a passer rating of 28.0. Hooker started his last possession at the Lions' 39-yard line with one minute 42 seconds left in the game and navigated Detroit down to the Miami 13-yard line before throwing a pass that was intercepted by Miami's Ethan Robinson to end the game.

Key stat: The Lions were just 1-for-12 on the afternoon on third down but did convert all three of their fourth-down attempts, converting on Allen passes to Meeks and TeSlaa in the first half and a Jacob Saylors 4-yard run on a 4th & 1 in the third quarter.

Big performance: For a second straight preseason game, Meeks was Detroit's leading receiver. The undrafted rookie out of Syracuse caught three passes for 78 yards and a touchdown last week in Atlanta. He followed that up with seven catches against the Dolphins Saturday for 93 yards and another score.

Meeks, 6-foot-2, 218 pounds has had a nice training camp and preseason and has likely given general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell plenty to talk about.
