How he fits: While the numbers look good at cornerback for the Lions after the re-signing of Rock Ya-Sin and the signing of veteran Roger McCreary in free agency to join starters D.J. Reed and Terrion Arnold, Detroit has dealt with a number of injuries at the position over the last couple years. Reed missed six games last year and Arnold missed nine.

Ennis Rakestraw Jr. is hoping to finally be healthy and show why he was a second-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Veterans Khalil Dorsey and Nick Whiteside provide depth.

But Lions general manager Brad Holmes drafts the player, not the position, and McCoy had an impressive 2024 season before missing last year with a torn ACL. He's one of the top cornerbacks in the class. He's a former triple and long-jump champion with explosive traits. McCoy is at his best playing press man coverage.

Key observations: McCoy started all 13 games in 2024 and led the Vols with 13 passes defended, four interceptions and seven pass breakups. According to Pro Football Focus, his 89.6 coverage grade in 2024 ranked third in the SEC and ninth in the FBS among cornerbacks.

What they had to say about him: "McCoy has only two years of tape to work with, as he sat out the 2025 season after tearing his ACL last January. His lone season at Tennessee in 2024 was outstanding, showcasing the totality of his 77-inch wingspan with seven pass breakups and four interceptions. He is a confident man-to-man coverage player with terrific balance, patience and ball skills.

"McCoy is at his best blanketing perimeter wideouts who want to stretch the field vertically; he's a big-play neutralizer on his own. Until he works out for scouts at his pro day, it's going to be difficult to peg where he actually gets picked. But right now, I've got him tapped as the top cornerback in this class." — Field Yates, ESPN

How he stacks up: Yates lists McCoy as the No. 15 overall player in the class and his top cornerback, right ahead of LSU's Mansoor Delane at No. 16.

McCoy comes in 15th on NFL media analyst Daniel Jeremiah's Top 50 as Jeremiah has Delane ranked ahead of him as his No. 9 prospect.

ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. and Yates have McCoy as the top cornerback in the class. Fellow ESPN draft analysts Matt Miller and Jordan Reid have McCoy as the second-best cornerback available after Delane.

Dane Brugler of The Athletic has McCoy ranked as the No. 16 prospect in his Top 100.

"The bad news is McCoy doesn't have any 2025 tape," Brugler wrote. "The good news is McCoy's 2024 tape is really, really good. He is patient, agile and balanced in press man, with the reactive athleticism to gear up or down quickly. He shows terrific awareness in zone coverage to feel and bait routes around him while also being able to drive on the action in front of him."

What he had to say: "I just feel like when you're ready, you're ready," McCoy said of his decision to enter the NFL Draft despite missing the 2025 season. "I felt ready to come out and talking with my family and my agent and coaches they were all on the same boat as me.

"I got back to training, and I felt like myself again. I made a big impact the year that I played (at Tennessee in 2024) and I just feel like I'm ready."
