TWENTYMAN: Week 7 observations

Welcome back: It didn't take Alim McNeill long to announce his presence in Monday night's contest. McNeill's rush on the second play of the first Tampa Bay possession flushed quarterback Baker Mayfield out of the pocket where he was sacked by linebacker Jack Campbell. McNeill finished with three pressures, a tackle and a pass deflection. It was good to see No. 54 make an impact in his first game back since Dec. 15 of last season.

Stop and start: Sometimes it's just not fair when Lions third-year running back Jahmyr Gibbs gets in open space against would-be tacklers. Tampa Bay linebacker SirVocea Dennis and cornerback Zyon McCollum found out the hard way on Gibbs' first touch of the game Monday night. Gibbs turned a little swing pass into a 30-yard gain by putting both Dennis and McCollum on skates in the open field. Gibbs had a 78-yard touchdown run in the contest and finished with 218 scrimmage yards and two rushing touchdowns.

Ugly 24: Lions quarterback Jared Goff described Monday's offensive performance as an 'ugly' 24 points. Detroit had 379 yards of offense, but Goff was disappointed they weren't able to convert some of the defense's takeaways and turnovers on downs into points. It's something he said they really need to put an emphasis on coming out of the bye week.

Pool report: Here's the explanation from NFL Vice President of Instant Replay Mark Butterworth on Tampa Bay's fourth-down conversion early in the fourth quarter that was overturned on a second replay review.

Butterworth: "We did look at the spot. We were trying to mirror angles together. Later in the process we received an enhanced view from broadcast that showed that when the knee was down, the ball was short of the line to gain. We were having issues with the referee's O2O (official-to-official communication system), which is why he was brought back to the monitor. We did not show him anything on the screen at that point, it was simply to communicate to clean up the ruling on the field."

Question: "So, it was a broadcast camera that prompted the second replay?"

Butterworth: "Yes, it was a broadcast camera. An enhanced view on the broadcast camera."

Kudos to Sheppard: What a terrific game plan first-year defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard put together Monday. He went back to an aggressive man style defense and the communication was on point despite four new starters in his secondary, including both safety spots. He trusted his linebackers to cover one-on-one in the middle and let those new starters in the secondary play fast. All three units played well, and Sheppard should feel good about the plan he devised and the way his players executed it.

Edge rush: It won't be surprising at all to find out that Detroit had a pass-rush win rate of over 60 percent when the film is watched. I counted 11 pressures from Aidan Hutchinson and eight from Al-Quadin Muhammad to lead Detroit. Muhammad recorded a half sack and now has 5.0 on the season. Hutchinson leads the Lions with 6.0. That's been a good edge duo all season for Detroit.

Big leg: Jake Bates concluded Detroit's scoring for the night with a 58-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. It was Bates' third career field goal of 58-plus yards and his second of the season. He is the first kicker in franchise history to make two field goals of 58-plus yards in a single season.

Mr. Monday night: Goff for his career is now 9-2 playing on Monday Night Football.

"I've been on some pretty good teams and had some pretty good success," Goff said after the game. "Wins gets attributed to the quarterback stat a lot but it's really a team stat. It's cool, it is cool. But I feel like our team shows up in primetime regardless – Monday Night, Sunday Night, Thanksgiving. It feels like that is kind of our nature. Do we win all of them? No, but we're dang good on primetime and it's fun to play in front of a pretty big crowd."

Front seven: Detroit's secondary will be a big story coming out of Monday but the front seven played really well too. Tampa Bay had just 41 rushing yards in the contest and Detroit recorded four sacks and four tackles for loss from their front seven.
