RECAP: Lions vs. Commanders

Recap: Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell said this week he wanted to see growth from his team, especially his young players, from the first preseason loss in Cincinnati to Saturday's matchup with Washington at Ford Field.

The Lions generated more total yards of offense (279), allowed fewer total yards (243), were better on third down (52.9 percent) and turned it over fewer times than they did in the preseason opener.

It all added up to a Lions victory as they improved to 1-1 in the preseason with a 17-13 win in front of 50,042 fans at home.

After a slow start that included a fumble recovered for a Commanders touchdown and an interception on Detroit's first two offensive drives, starting quarterback Josh Dobbs put Detroit on the board with a 50-yard run on a read option play midway through the first quarter.

Wide receiver Tay Martin and tight end Tyler Conklin had great blocks to spring Dobbs.

A Commanders 27-yard field goal midway through the third quarter gave them a 10-7 lead until Lions running back Trayveon Williams punched it in from one yard out and gave Detroit their first lead of the contest with nine seconds left in the third quarter.

A big 4th & 2 stop at the Washington 39-yard line by the Lions' defense with just under seven minutes left in the game led to a 37-yard field goal and a 17-13 Detroit lead.

Tight end Jackson Meeks forced a fumble on the ensuing kickoff with linebacker Erick Hunter recovering the ball at the Washington 25-yard line. That allowed the Lions to get one first down and run the clock out for the win.

QB Comparison: Dobbs got the start and played the first and third quarters. He was sacked by former Lion Amik Robertson and fumbled at the Detroit 18-yard line. After the ball kicked around a bit, it was eventually recovered in the end zone by the Commanders for the first points of the contest.

Dobbs completed 7-of-12 passes for 74 yards with an interception and a 41.7 passer rating. He also rushed for 53 yards, including that 50-yard touchdown on his third drive of the first quarter.

Rookie Luke Altmyer played the second and fourth quarters. He completed nine of his 13 pass attempts for 86 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions and a 87.3 rating.

Campbell said this week the backup quarterback job is still open between Dobbs and Altmyer. Each will have one more chance next Saturday to make a final impression in the preseason before roster cuts.

Star performance: Running backs Jahmyr Gibbs, Isiah Pacheco and Sione Vaki did not play Sunday, which gave Detroit's reserve backs an opportunity to stand out. They did just that.

The Lions totaled 169 rushing yards in the contest with Williams (36), Jacob Saylors (32), Raheem Blackshear (29) and Jabari Small (16) all making contributions to that total from the running back position. Williams also had a 24-yard reception.

Key stat: Detroit wants to get back to being a physical running football team after finishing 14th in rushing offense last season. The Lions got after the Commanders in the run game Saturday to the tune of 169 yards on 35 carries for a 4.3-yard average per rush and two rushing touchdowns.

Injury report: Wide receiver Cedrick Wilson Jr. and offensive lineman Michael Niese both left the game with undisclosed injuries and did not return.
