Lions hire Drew Petzing as offensive coordinator

Allen Park, Mich. – The Detroit Lions announced today the hiring of Drew Petzing as offensive coordinator. Contract terms were not disclosed.

Petzing joins the Lions in 2026 after spending the previous three seasons (2023-25) as the Arizona Cardinals' offensive coordinator. Over the duration of his three seasons leading Arizona's offense, the Cardinals ranked second in the NFL in rushing average (4.92) and were ninth in rushing yards (6,399). Under Petzing's guidance, Cardinals TE Trey McBride earned consecutive Pro Bowl selections (2024-25) and was named First-Team AP All-Pro in 2025 after leading all NFL tight ends in receptions (126) and receiving yards (1,239), while tying for the most receiving touchdowns (11). McBride's 126 receptions established a single-season NFL record among tight ends while his 1,239 receiving yards were the 11th-most in a season by a tight end in NFL history.

Entering his 14th NFL season in 2026, Petzing's previous professional experience includes time with the Cleveland Browns as quarterbacks coach (2022), tight ends coach (2020-21) and a football operations intern (2013) and with the Minnesota Vikings as wide receivers coach (2019), assistant quarterbacks coach (2018) and assistant wide receivers coach (2014-17).

Prior to entering the professional coaching ranks, Petzing served as the outside linebackers coach at Yale (2012), a graduate assistant at Boston College (2010-11), a volunteer assistant at Harvard (2009) and a student assistant at Middlebury College (2007-08). Before embarking on his coaching career, Petzing spent his first two years at Middlebury College (2005-06) as a defensive back.
