NOTEBOOK: Rookie WR Isaac TeSlaa could see more opportunities

Rookie wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa has seen his offensive reps increase the last few weeks having played 20-plus reps in each of Detroit's last three games.

Those reps could significantly increase Thursday if wide receiver Kalif Raymond isn't able to play due to the ankle injury he suffered Sunday against the New York Giants. Raymond didn't take part in Detroit's walkthroughs this week, and head coach Dan Campbell said Tuesday Raymond's ankle is still stiff.

If Raymond can't go, TeSlaa steps into the No. 3 receiver role.

"Obviously, I'm grateful for the opportunity. Some of the things that shook out are unfortunate with Sam LaPorta and Kalif (Raymond) going down. You never want to see that as a teammate," TeSlaa said Tuesday.

"But football is about next man up mentality, so the next man has to come up and as a team you don't want to see any drop-off. Just the opportunity to go in there and kind of fill that role and have the potential to go out there and make a play, I'm really excited about it in a big game like this."

TeSlaa, Detroit's third-round pick in this year's NFL Draft, has four receptions on the season for 65 yards - two of those are touchdowns, including a 13-yarder Week 1 in Green Bay.

"We like where TeSlaa's at. He's had a ton of growth," Campbell said Tuesday. "And look, we went into this year saying, 'Hey, let's let this guy grow.' There will be a place for him on special teams, and he'll be a spot player on offense. And then once he proves that there's more than that, then that's what he is until then."

TeSlaa certainly still has room to grow, but Campbell thinks he'll be ready for a more significant role and will take advantage of it when it comes.

"He's gotten better and better and better," Campbell said. "And we are, we're asking him to do more. And so, I do believe it's going to come. I do believe he'll get an uptick in production; he'll get used a little bit more here. But I like where he's at, he's doing a good job."

DAVENPORT GETTING CLOSE

Veteran edge rusher Marcus Davenport was listed as a full participant in last Friday's practice for the first time since returning from injured reserve and has taken full part in the walkthroughs this week. We haven't seen Davenport since he was injured Week 2 vs. Chicago and subsequently placed on injured reserve. He missed all but one game last year due to injury but the Lions are hopeful he'll be back soon and can impact their pass rush down the stretch.

"It would be big to be able to get him back," Campbell said of Davenport. "He's done a lot to get back. The amount of work that he's put in and the amount of rehab. And look, it's not his fault things have happened. All you can do is go back to work and do everything you can to return and get your body healed up and come back better than you were.

"And he's done everything that that requires. So, we're hopeful. He walked through yesterday, he's going to walk through again today, and we'll see."

CATCH MACHINE

Wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown needs five receptions Sunday to tie former Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas for the most receptions by a player in their first five career seasons. St. Brown currently has 505 career receptions following a nine-reception, 149-yard performance against the New York Giants on Sunday that included an 11-yard touchdown grab.

Thomas recorded 510 catches in his first five seasons from 2016-20. St. Brown has already passed CeeDee Lamb (496), Justin Jefferson (495) and Jarvis Landry (481) with only Thomas currently sitting ahead of him. St. Brown is first in franchise history in receptions (505) and 100-yard games (22) and second in receiving touchdowns (42) and receiving yards (5,735) through a player's first five seasons.

EXTRA POINTS

  • Campbell said he doesn't see Kerby Joseph (knee) playing Thursday, which means Detroit's All-Pro safety will miss his sixth straight game.
  • Only 6.8 percent of the Lions' pass attempts this season have traveled 20 or more air yards, which ranks 32nd in the NFL, per TruMedia. Goff is 7-for-19 with 215 yards, three touchdowns, one interception and a 97.6 rating when the football travels at least 21 yards on a pass attempt. His 19 attempts are the lowest in the NFL on those throws.
