Lions offseason questions: Under-the-radar player to watch

We've already talked about new Lions to watch like cornerback D.J. Reed, and players with breakout potential like linebacker Jack Campbell, but who else should we be keeping an eye on in 2025 that might not already be on the radar?

I asked the Detroitlions.com crew, and here's what they had to say:

Tim Twentyman: LB Derrick Barnes

The Lions ask a lot from their SAM linebacker spot, and it's not an easy position to play being both on and off the ball. Barnes has a unique skill set as an effective pass rusher and being able to play in space. The defense missed his presence last year after a Week 3 knee injury in Arizona ended his 2024 season.

If Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport stay healthy and the duo of Alim McNeill and Tyleik Williams can be as disruptive along the interior as Detroit hopes they'll be, Barnes could be one of the biggest beneficiaries from a statistical standpoint.

Dannie Rogers: LB Derrick Barnes

It doesn't feel like hardly any Detroit Lions are lying under-the-radar right now, but Barnes also gets my vote. After sitting out almost the entire 2024 season with some incredible plays the season before — like picking off Baker Mayfield in the Divisional Round at Ford Field — Barnes is back to full health.

He will be a key piece in the linebacker room. Some might have forgotten about him, but I'd love to see Barnes get his name back on the radar as a top player for Detroit.

Editor's Pick: CB Ennis Rakestraw Jr.

After an injury-shortened rookie season, Rakestraw may be flying under the radar, but his teammates and coaches have certainly taken notice this spring. With fellow second-year cornerback Terrion Arnold not taking part in OTA practices, Rakestraw got some starting outside cornerback reps and made the most of the opportunity.

If he carries that momentum into training camp and stays healthy, he could be one to watch in 2025.
