Lions offseason questions: New Lion to watch

The 2025 NFL Draft is in the books. The Detroit Lions selected seven players to make up their newest draft class with a focus on bolstering the trenches.

Between the draft and free agency, there are a lot of new players to keep an eye on as the Lions continue to work their way through the offseason training program.

Which new Lion are you most excited to see hit the field in 2025? I asked the Detroitlions.com crew, and here's what they had to say:

Tim Twentyman: Defensive lineman Tyleik Williams

The reaction in the draft room by the Lions brass when they were able to select Tyleik Williams at No. 28 tells me he was the player they targeted and really wanted. His quickness for a player with his size and strength traits is really intriguing. I think there's more there as an interior pass rusher than he was asked to do at Ohio State.

My guess is he carves out an early role and it will really be exciting to watch him once Alim McNeill returns from a torn ACL suffered in December and those two can play off each other with their size/strength/quickness combination along the interior of Detroit's defensive line.

Dannie Rogers: Wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa

The new Detroit Lion I'm most intrigued to see hit the field in 2025 is the hometown kid and third-round pick Isaac TeSlaa. He'll be fifth in line in the receiver room behind Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Tim Patrick and Kalif Raymond.

It will be interesting to see his versatile skillset against the big guys in the NFL with his 6-foot-4-inch frame. I'll be curious to see what role he's slated in more — the slot or on the outside — and if he can climb the ladder to the No. 3 spot in the room before the regular season starts.

Cole Bambini: Cornerback D.J. Reed

Detroit wasn't the biggest player in free agency, but the one pick-up general manager Brad Holmes invested in the most was cornerback D.J. Reed, who signed a three-year deal in March. Reed, another veteran presence in the secondary, will line up across Terrion Arnold and I'm excited to see that cornerback pairing complemented by the Lions' dynamic safety duo of Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch. I think the Lions could have the best secondary in the league.

Reed is an aggressive corner with strong coverage skills and a high-level tackling ability, and I'm hoping he can generate more interceptions for the Lions at the position — Detroit recorded just two interceptions at cornerback in 2024.

Editor's Pick: Rookie OL

I'm cheating and picking both rookie interior offensive linemen — Tate Ratledge and Miles Frazier.

The Lions' offense runs through their offensive line, and there's an open starting spot at guard with the departure of Kevin Zeitler in free agency. Can either of these two rookies show enough in OTAs & training camp to earn a role over one of the veterans on the roster? It should be fun to watch.
