TWENTYMAN: Training camp Day 11 observations

Hutch rule: Aidan Hutchinson has been so dominant for most of Lions training camp that head coach Dan Campbell sometimes has to adopt the Hutch rule at practice. The Hutch rule is when Hutchinson beats his man and likely has a sack on a play but they don't blow the whistle and continue the rep so the offense can get their work in during team periods.

"If you can't block Hutch and he's going to blow every practice up, then that's not good either," Campbell said Wednesday.

Situational football: I led with the Hutchinson observation because it factored into one of the big situational periods of the day. The offense was given the ball down 24-14 with 3:41 on the clock in the fourth quarter at their own 31-yard line. The offense was able to navigate down the field and score with a little over a minute to go but Hutchinson had a third-down sack that the offense was allowed to play through that would have made a fourth and long situation very hard to get. Safety Kerby Joseph also likely had a sack on a blitz and Campbell let the offense continue through.

Amon-Ra St. Brown got a touchdown for the offense with a little over a minute on the clock. The second part of the drill was simulating a three-and-out by the defense and the offense getting the ball back at their own 20-yard line with 56 seconds left, down three, with no timeouts. Hutchinson had a deflected pass on first down and veteran defensive back Avonte Maddox ended up winning the drill for the defense when a ball bounced off wide receiver Jameson Williams and into Maddox's hands for the interception.

Versatility: With Terrion Arnold (hamstring) and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. (shoulder) not practicing Wednesday, nickel cornerback Amik Robertson stepped outside opposite D.J. Reed and the defense didn't skip a beat. What a luxury to have a player like Roberston to be able to move outside. We saw what he did in that role Week 18 last season in the win over Minnesota when he held Vikings All-Pro wide receiver Justin Jefferson to three catches for 54 yards on nine targets.

Drops: The Lions had the fewest number of drops and lowest drop percentage in the NFL last season but that wasn't the case in Wednesday's practice. Williams had a couple, Jahmyr Gibbs had one and the usually sure handed St. Brown also had one. It hasn't been an issue at all through camp so I chalk it up to just one of those days.

Tight window: I mentioned the one drop by Gibbs in the flat in a team period but he also made a really difficult tight-window catch near the goal line with linebacker Jack Campbell in great coverage and a number of defenders converging on him. Gibbs has been pretty sure-handed throughout camp and OC John Morton is using him a lot in the passing game.

Deep connection: The completion percentage of throws that travel at least 40 yards in the air is around 20-25. Quarterback Jared Goff takes his fair share of shots down the field to Williams, usually at least once a practice, but it's been a while since one of those hit. Williams had a step on defenders on the first play of team period early in practice but Goff put the throw a little bit too far inside where Reed had a better chance of catching it than Williams. There's still a month to go to fine-tune that timing and connection. Williams was tied for the NFL lead last year with five 50-plus-yard completions and four 50-plus-yard touchdown catches.

Team red zone: The first-team offense and defense squared off in a red-zone team period midway through practice that was some really competitive work. The defense won the first series with a three-and-out. The offense punched it into the end zone on the second possession on a fourth-down touchdown pass from Goff to wide receiver Kalif Raymond streaking across the backline of the end zone. Raymond's been a huge playmaker for the offense the last few practices.

Receptions in bulk: Veteran wide receiver Tom Kennedy has moved between the practice squad and active roster in Detroit for a number of years now. He's a crafty slot receiver who can also return kicks and play special teams. I had him catching six passes in team periods Wednesday, including a touchdown. There's a reason he's stuck around the last few years.

Michigan men: University of Michigan legend and Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard was checking out Lions practice Wednesday. As Hutchinson was heading into the building after practice he spotted Howard and ran right over. The two exchanged pleasantries and talked for a few minutes. A lot of great Michigan football memories watching those two chat it up after practice.
