The Lions are expecting cornerback Terrion Arnold to take a big leap forward in his second season. How much of a leap could be a factor in determining just how much better the Lions' pass defense can be in 2025.
Arnold started 15 games for the Lions last season after Detroit moved up in the first round to take him with the 24th overall pick. He was a starter on the outside from Day 1 as a rookie, playing in 91 percent of the defensive reps and allowing just a 55.6 completion percentage in his coverage area with four touchdowns allowed.
He struggled early with some penalty issues but cleaned those up by the end of the season and had solid numbers that included 60 tackles (47 solo) and 10 passes defended.

Arnold made two nice defensive plays in Monday's practice in tight coverage on wide receivers Isaac TeSlaa and Jameson Williams, and has had a solid camp despite missing a couple weeks with an injury.
"The biggest growth has been the game slowing down," Arnold said after practice Monday about his comfort level in Year 2. "Take one play at a time. Getting in the film room. I feel like I've got the best coaching staff in the NFL right now, just as far as me being able to text coach Deshea (Townsend) at six o'clock in the morning, 'Hey, I'll be there in 30 minutes. We're meeting at 6:30.'
"JO (Jim O'Neil) getting to the building and he's already ahead of meeting with the other guys. Just the room that we have, I don't take it for granted."
Arnold said those early morning sessions with Townsend, Lions passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach, have been invaluable for him. They go over the routes he'll probably see that day in practice, cleaning up technique issues, and going over film from his rookie season.
Townsend's main message to Arnold has been all about the football - get your hands on the football and hopefully secure Arnold's first career interception.
Arnold's veteran teammates have also been a big influence on him.
"Those guys literally helped me take the biggest jump," Arnold said. "Just being on me and making sure I'm a professional. Grooming me to be a leader. Amik (Robertson) going into what, his sixth year? D.J. (Reed) going into his seventh or eighth year. I don't take that for granted. Just being able to have tremendous guys like that in the room."
Arnold said the competitive nature of the secondary in training camp has been huge as well. This unit has a chance to be pretty good with starters Arnold, Reed, Robertson, Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch, and talent and depth behind them.
"We gel well together," Arnold said. "We just show up and go to work together. It's a group of guys that all fit in together. We love spending time outside the building together. We love breaking down film together and we're hard on each other."
The play from the secondary through camp has been impressive. They have a chance to be a strength of this football team. Arnold is hoping to play a big part of that in his second season.
"We're fast, we play hard, and we compete," Arnold said. "This is our identity."
