Camp Notes: Lions' defense 'a handful right now' in practice

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell talked Wednesday morning about the defense's progression through the first couple weeks of training camp.

"Yeah, I mean, it's a good barometer to try to figure out exactly where you're at and I think you take it for what it is," Campbell said of the defense being a little ahead of the offense. "I do believe our defense is, we're playing pretty good right now, we're practicing well, we're running pretty efficient, (Kelvin Sheppard) Shep's doing a nice job over there.

"We're pretty versatile in coverage and pressure, we've got the front to handle the run right now and then we're pretty sticky on the back end, that's a good combination. We can crush the pocket. That's versus our offense. I do see that."

Wednesday was another banner day for the defense, winning multiple team periods and coming up with a takeaway. The defense is certainly not a finished product and there's plenty to improve upon, but it's been tangible how much better they've looked from this time last year to start camp, especially in the secondary. This might be the best secondary the Lions have assembled in Campbell and GM Brad Holmes' tenure in Detroit and it's showing every day in practice.

"I think they're a handful right now and then offensively, certainly we want to be clicking a little bit better, but I also know we're like this far (holding two fingers close) away," Campbell said. "They're all correctable, that's what's awesome. So, we're growing, we're getting better, I love the fact that we're being challenged on both sides, we really are. I feel like we're challenging each other."

It has been a really competitive camp between the offense and the defense and that should benefit both sides of the football come the start of the regular season Sept. 7 in Green Bay.

"I just feel like defensive-wise we've been executing and putting the pressure on and (Sheppard) is a coach where he likes the physicality and physical part of the game and loves to get after it and loves to get after the quarterback and just apply pressure," linebacker Derrick Barnes said after practice Wednesday.

"Obviously have things to clean up. That's how it is in camp. You live and you learn and you watch the tape and you clean it up and so far it's been the standard for us as a defense ... but I'm super excited what's in store for us a defense this year."

HOLMES ON SMITH

Lions general manager Brad Holmes was on 97.1 Wednesday morning. He was asked about veteran free agent pass rusher Za'Darius Smith, and said there was still interest there.

"We've been keeping in touch," Holmes said.

Smith played in eight games with Detroit after the Lions acquired him from Cleveland at the trade deadline last season.

INJURY UPDATES

Defensive lineman Pat O’Connor (leg), wide receiver Dominic Lovett (abdomen) and tackle Jamarco Jones (ankle) all left practice Monday and did not return. Campbell gave an update Wednesday on their status and it appears all three avoided significant injury.

"I don't know, a week on a couple of guys. Lovett may be 10 days, but they're good," Campbell said. "I mean it's just going to take a minute."
