Best competition: Backup quarterback job

Hooker and Allen rotated second-team reps in the two open OTA practices, and quarterbacks coach Mark Brunell said this offseason it's a wide-open competition between the two to be Goff's backup.

Hooker served as Goff's backup during the regular season last year, but the team signed Bridgewater to be Goff's backup in the playoffs, opting for more experience. Hooker now heads into his third season looking to prove he's progressed enough for the Lions to trust him in the role permanently.

Allen is a seven-year veteran with stints in Carolina (2018-2019), Washington (2020-21), Houston (2022), Buffalo (2023) and Pittsburgh (2024). He's made 19 career starts with a 62.7 completion percentage, recording 26 touchdowns, 21 interceptions and a 7-12 record in those starts.

Both Hooker and Allen have the benefit of getting four preseason games to impress coaches instead of the standard three because the Lions are playing in the Hall of Fame game July 31.

Twentyman's take: Goff has been one of the most consistent quarterbacks in the NFL over the last three seasons and has led Detroit to back-to-back NFC North division titles. He ranked second in the league last year in passing yards (4,629), fourth in touchdowns (37) and second in passer rating (111.8), earning his fourth career Pro Bowl nod.

He has a new offensive coordinator heading into 2025 and there's going to be some changes and elements added to the offense that new OC John Morton believes in. The good thing is Morton was on staff in 2022 as Detroit's pass game coordinator and worked closely with Goff so there's familiarity.

Goff also has to navigate the challenge of losing All-Pro center Frank Ragnow, who worked with Goff handling the protections and preparing for the week's opponent. Goff will have to take on a bigger role there, especially if the Lions go with rookie Tate Ratledge at center.

Goff's been in this league 10 years and has seen a lot. If there's anyone who can navigate a new coordinator and new center going into a season it's him. It certainly doesn't hurt that he still has Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Sam LaPorta, Jahmyr Gibbs, David Montgomery and other skill weapons to throw the ball to and hand it off. Will the O-line take a step back without Ragnow? That's my biggest question mark heading into camp. Goff is at his best when he's protected and can deliver the ball on time and accurately.

By the numbers:

9: Number of games in which Goff completed at least 75 percent of his passes last season. That set a single-season record, breaking Tom Brady's eight-game mark back in 2007.

12: Interceptions thrown by Goff last season, tied for the third-highest in the league behind Kirk Cousins (16), Baker Mayfield (16) and Geno Smith (15).

68.3: Goff's completion percentage last season on third down. It was the highest completion percentage among all quarterbacks who attempted at least 100 passes on third down last season.

70: Touchdowns scored by the Lions in 2024, the most in the NFL and a new franchise record.

119.3: Goff's passer rating when blitzed in 2024. He had 15 touchdowns vs. just two interceptions when blitzed and was sacked seven times.

Quotable: "It's fun. It's a challenge," Goff said of learning Morton’s offense. "It's new stuff. It's new communication. It's different ways he likes to do things and learning each other. It's a fun challenge. It's something we're working through every day and something that's fun to overcome and get closer to where we want to be."
