NOTEBOOK: Goff, Lions' offense bounce back with 50+ points vs. Bears

There is something about coming back from a loss that really seems to fuel Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff.

The Lions have gone 46 games since losing back-to-back contests dating back to the middle of the 2022 season, and Goff has played some of his best football coming off losses.

In games following the last four Lions losses, Goff has had a passer rating well above 100.0 in leading Detroit to convincing victories.

Goff is a gamer, and he was just that again for the Lions in Sunday's 52-21 win over Chicago following a Week 1 loss to the Green Bay Packers. Goff finished 23-of-28 passing for 334 yards with five touchdowns, no interceptions and a 156.0 passer rating. He was nearly perfect in leading Detroit to a dominating offensive performance.

"I mean, when you protect him and you let him see it, I think he's – I mean, he's one of the best in the league," said Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, who was on the receiving end of three Goff touchdowns vs. the Bears. "I mean, he showed who he is today, why we appreciate him so much as a quarterback."

Just how good was Goff Sunday?

It was his second career game with at least 300 passing yards, an 80 percent completion percentage and a 155.0 passer rating. That's tied with Tom Brady, Kurt Warner, Peyton Manning and Lamar Jackson for the most in NFL history.

He'll have to be good again next week against a tough Baltimore Ravens' defense on the road on Monday Night Football.

EXPLAINING END OF HALF SCENARIO

With just 21 seconds left in the second quarter, the Lions were driving at the Chicago 33-yard line. They faced a 1st & 10. Goff lofted a pass down the right sideline that rookie wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa made a diving one-hand grab on.

After initially being ruled out of bounds on the play and the clock stopped, it was changed to TeSlaa being ruled down by contact with 16 seconds on the clock. Because the clock was stopped when it shouldn't have been and the Lions were out of timeouts, there was a 10 second runoff to six seconds.

Detroit was able to run one more play. Goff hit St. Brown for a 6-yard touchdown with two seconds left in the half.

"They ruled that it was a completed catch with the receiver out of bounds," NFL Vice President of Instant Replay Mark Butterworth told PFWA Pool Reporter Nolan Bianchi after the game. "The impact of that ruling is the clock stopped because they ruled him out of bounds. If they ruled him in bounds with the catch the clock would continue to run.

"We stopped the game through replay to confirm the catch, which we were able to do. We confirmed there was contact by the defense after he controlled the ball, and we had his leg in bounds prior to going out of bounds. Therefore, the clock should have continued to run. So, we reset the clock to the down by contact time and then ran 10 seconds."

ONE-HANDED CATCHES

Have there been two better catches to begin a player's career than the two one-handed grabs by TeSlaa these first two weeks?

He had a one-handed touchdown catch Week 1 in Green Bay and a 29-yard diving one-handed grab Sunday late in the first half to set up a touchdown.

"That's it, that's it. That's the only place to be used," Lions head coach Dan Campbell joked after the game. "What do we need here? We need a one-hand catch right before halftime, get him in.' I'd say that he's – that's two opportunities, and he's made two plays. So, he's going to get more opportunities."

EXTRA POINT

Aidan Hutchinson recorded two tackles, 1.0 sack, one quarterback hit and one tackle for loss. He's now registered at least one quarterback hit for the 17th straight game, tying the franchise record.
