NOTEBOOK: Campbell 'hopeful' Mahogany can return for Lions-Steelers

The Detroit Lions had a walkthrough practice Wednesday and listed second-year guard Christian Mahogany as a full participant. Head coach Dan Campbell said Wednesday he's hopeful his starting left guard can return to the lineup Sunday in a must-win game for the Lions in their home finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

"We'll know a lot more tomorrow," Campbell said of how Mahogany could look after a full practice on Thursday. "I know by last week, certainly was, 'OK, that looked pretty good.' But also knew he wasn't ready. So, we're hopeful."

Mahogany has been out since suffering a leg injury Week 9 against Minnesota. The team started his practice window last week and listed him as a limited participant last Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and questionable to play before being downgraded to out on Saturday.

It's certainly encouraging that Mahogany has started this week as a full participant on Wednesday's estimated practice report.

"I hope he feels good, but we'll know more really by Friday," Campbell said. "So, full speed tomorrow, Friday he'll go through, and then we'll see if he can go."

GETTING MONTGOMERY MORE INVOLVED

Jahmyr Gibbs is one of the most explosive players at the running back position in the NFL with the ability to score from anywhere on the field every time he touches the football. It's hard not to give talent like that the football as much as a team can.

But Detroit's run game has been one of the best in the NFL the last three seasons because it's been a two-headed monster complemented by veteran David Montgomery.

Montgomery got double-digit carries in seven of Detroit's first nine games but hasn't reached at least 10 rushing attempts in any of the team's last five contests, three of which have been losses. Montgomery carried the ball just seven times last week against the Rams, including a 1-yard touchdown run on a direct snap.

Campbell said Wednesday he's looking to get Montgomery more involved down the stretch.

"Every good player wants their chance to help the team win and get some production, so I know it can't be easy," Campbell said of Montgomery's limited touches of late. "I know it's not easy, but he's a pro. He handles his business and goes about it, and whenever you call his number, he's ready to go.

"It is something I think about a lot, is how do we get them all involved? He's one of those, when they're all involved, we're just better. We're a better offense. Where do we get him touches? Where do we find them? So, I do. I think about him a lot."

STARTING MANU'S CLOCK

Detroit started the practice window of second-year tackle Giovanni Manu on Wednesday. Manu has been on IR since early October.

Campbell said Manu needs three weeks of practice reps against Detroit's starters on defense to get back in the flow and set him up for the offseason. Campbell said anything they get out of him the rest of the year would be a bonus, but they can't get him enough practice reps.

MORE 13 PERSONNEL

The Los Angeles Rams were very successful last week running 13 personnel (one running back and three tight ends) against the Lions, using it on 43 plays. Of the Rams' 35 second-half plays, they ran 13 personnel on 27 of them.

Los Angeles finished with 159 rushing yards (5.5 avg.) and 519 total yards with the majority coming out of 13 personnel as they had over a 70 percent success rate in that grouping last week.

This week's opponent, the Pittsburgh Steelers, have operated out of 13 personnel the second most behind the Rams this season.

"I think seeing it actually was probably one of the best things getting ready for this game, as we just came out of a full game with it," Campbell said Wednesday. "I think we can help them a little bit here, I think seeing it last week is big, and I think we focus on those guys and their keys, man. Their eyes, where your eyes belong, where's your fit? That'll all help."

EXTRA POINTS

  • Detroit signed cornerback Keenan Garber to the practice squad Tuesday. Garber went undrafted out of Kansas State this past NFL Draft and was most recently on Indianapolis' practice squad before being released Oct. 21.
  • The Tennessee Titans signed safety Erick Hallett off Detroit's practice squad. Hallett played in three games (two starts) with Detroit. He recorded 18 tackles in those two starts against Tampa Bay and Los Angeles. He'll be on Tennessee's 53-man roster the remainder of the season.
