TWENTYMAN: Training camp Day 6 observations

Bringing the juice: The energy level was definitely up Saturday as the Lions welcomed season ticket members to the Meijer Performance Center for practice. The fans definitely brought the energy and the players were responding to it all practice.

Red-zone offense: Saturday was a padded red zone day for the Lions so I charted the quarterback play in a competitive 7-on-7 period, as follows:

  • Jared Goff was 5-for-6 with a touchdown pass to wide receiver Jameson Williams on a crosser. Goff's only incompletion in the period was a drop by running back David Montgomery. I thought Goff had a strong day overall Saturday.
  • Hendon Hooker ran the second offensive unit and went 3-for-6 in the period. He made a great throw to wide receiver Tom Kennedy in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown but missed high on a couple other throws.
  • Kyle Allen was a perfect 6-for-6 for the third team. Four of those were short drop-offs but he did make a really nice throw to rookie wide receiver Dominic Lovett between three defenders for a score and had another touchdown pass to tight end Brock Wright.

Catch of the day: Kennedy's grab from Hooker was really nice in the 7-on-7. Rookie Jackson Meeks had a nice sliding one-handed catch early in practice too. But I have to give the award to the rookie Isaac TeSlaa for ending the last team period of practice with a TD catch down the left sideline where he battled a 50-50 ball away from cornerback Dicaprio Bootle.

Tough runner: Rookie running back Kye Robichaux is going to be someone to watch Thursday night in Detroit's first preseason contest. Let's just say the rookie doesn't shy away from contact and always looks to finish a run. He delivered some nice finishing blows on runs Saturday and plays a physical brand of football.

Vantage point: For one red zone period, I was standing right by the upright behind the end zone with the offense coming towards me. It was a great view to watch Goff's eyes and how he uses them to manipulate or look off defenders. It's an underrated skill for a quarterback and it was cool watching him from that vantage point to see how the defenders reacted to it.

Big play: The Lions have so many skill weapons we sometimes forget about veteran Kalif Raymond. Not only is Raymond one of the best punt returners in the league, but he's a reliable receiver as well. In a team period vs. the defense, Goff hit Raymond on the right sideline and Raymond spun away from cornerback Amik Robertson and finished with a long touchdown.

Off the crossbar: Goff connected with Williams on a red zone 7-on-7 touchdown when Williams took a short crosser into the end zone after eluding two defenders. Williams' celebration was a between-the-legs dunk attempt over the crossbar. He got up there but was just short with it and it bounced off the crossbar. Nice attempt though.

Practice report: Linebacker Alex Anzalone was back at practice, though most of his work was off to the side as he works back into the mix. Cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. returned to practice after missing the last few days with a chest injury. Cornerback D.J. Reed and Edge rusher Al-Quadin Muhammad worked off to the side of practice and look close to returning. Safety Kerby Joseph did not practice Saturday.
