TWENTYMAN: Training camp Day 4 observations

Pass catcher: Third-year running back Jahmyr Gibbs has been a big part of the passing game in Detroit with 52 receptions in each of his first two seasons. Don't be surprised if he catches more passes this season in John Morton's offense. He's been used a ton in the passing game the first four days of camp and took a short pass in a team period late in Thursday's practice to the house.

Pick six: Safety Erick Hallett Jr. had the biggest play of Thursday's practice for the defense stepping in front of a Jared Goff pass intended for wide receiver Jameson Williams along the right sideline on a comebacker, taking it to the house for a defensive score. Hallett has had a nice start to camp trying to battle for a roster spot as the No. 4 safety. Defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard has put an emphasis on creating negative plays and turnovers. Along with that interception, his defense also forced a fumble later in practice. Good to see.

Glasgow at center: Tate Ratledge has taken most of the reps at center with the first-team offense the first three days of camp but Thursday it was veteran Graham Glasgow taking all those reps while Ratledge played right guard with the first team. Run game coordinator and offensive line coach Hank Fraley cross-trains his players upfront a lot. He's trying to find the best five-man combination before the end of camp. We'll see if Ratledge is back at center Friday.

Edge help: Two edge rushers who have caught my eye these first few days of camp are Nate Lynn and Isaac Ukwu. Both players have played a lot in the offense's backfield and flashed good rush ability. The depth on the edge behind Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport is still very much up for grabs. Those are two names to keep a close eye on when the pads come on in practice and the preseason starts.

Catch of the day: This goes to rookie wide receiver Dominic Lovett who had a leaping one-handed catch down the right sideline in a 7-on-7 period. It was across the field from where I was standing so I couldn't tell if he got his feet inbounds or not. The defensive players standing there waved him out of bounds. Still, it was a great catch. Lovett is battling for one of the last receiver spots on the roster and has flashed here and there the first week of camp.

Versatility: Head coach Dan Campbell loves versatile players, and eight-year veteran defensive back Avonte Maddox is proving to be just that for Detroit's defense. He nearly had an interception playing the No. 3 safety role in an early team period and a few plays later was at cornerback and made a nice play along the sideline. The Lions can use him at both safety and cornerback, much like they do with Brian Branch, and having a number of those players is invaluable throughout the course of the season.

Bates report: Kicker Jake Bates was 6-of-8 kicking field goals in two separate team periods Thursday. He missed two left from 53 yards. He also had a make from 53 yards. Bates had an up-and-down camp last year for the Lions but won the job and proceeded to make 26-of-29 field goal attempts including three game-winners last season.

Injury update: Linebacker Derrick Barnes left practice and was being evaluated for a hand injury. Also leaving practice was second-year cornerback Terrion Arnold who was being evaluated for a leg injury.

Up next: The acclimation period is over and the expectation is the Lions will practice in pads Friday morning at the Meijer Performance Center. The first padded practice is always a fun one to watch.
