TWENTYMAN: Training camp Day 3 observations

Have a day: Monday, it was veteran edge rusher Marcus Davenport who stood out to me at practice. Tuesday it was second-year cornerback Terrion Arnold. He had a great one-on-one rep against wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown early in practice that resulted in an interception for Arnold. He also knocked the ball away from wide receiver Jameson Williams in a one-on-one rep. He made another play forcing an incompletion to St. Brown in a 7-on-7 period a little later in practice. Arnold is having a great start to camp.

Getting noticed: Lions head coach Dan Campbell was asked about Detroit's defensive line depth and one of the names he mentioned catching his eye was rookie Keith Cooper Jr. out of Houston. Cooper flashed a couple times Tuesday and he's one of the young players to keep an eye on as we get closer to the preseason. Cooper (6-5, 280) had 46 tackles, nine tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks for the University of Houston last season.

Double trouble: Over the course of the first three training camp practices, we've seen running backs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery on the field together, maybe more than I can remember in the last two years. Morton seems to like that combo together and the pressure it could potentially put on the defense.

Catch of the day: Easy choice today as tight end Brock Wright made a really difficult third-down catch up the left seam with linebacker Jack Campbell in tight coverage. Wright is a very underrated No. 2 tight end in this league in my opinion.

Third-down day: Tuesday was a heavy third-down day for the Lions. It always seems like third-down days and red-zone days boost the energy level and juice for both the players and the coaches. It was palpable watching practice.

Special teams: I love listening to Dave Fipp coach special teams on the field. He's got a ton of energy, a lot of really detailed instruction, is quick to correct mistakes, and also quick to give praise when earned. Fipp really loved the way second-year edge rusher Isaac Ukwu played a couple reps in a special teams drill. For players like Ukwu and so many others, flashing on special teams could be the best way onto the 53-man roster.

Preseason approaching: One young player who fans are going to like watching is rookie edge rusher Ahmed Hassanein. He has a motor that never quits and has been making his mark with the second-team defense early in camp. Something tells me Lions fans are going to like his style of play. He never stops.

Injury update: Veteran defensive lineman Brodric Martin left practice early and is being evaluated for a foot injury.
