DETROIT - Detroit Lions Safety Don Carey is not just an NFL special teams ace, he is also an author. Carey will be releasing his new book, "It's Not Because I'm Better Than You!", on October 15, 2017.
It's Not Because I'm Better Than You! is Carey's first book. Written between the practices and games of a grueling NFL schedule, the book looks to help young people and adults bridge the gap between desire and accomplishment, through insights and reflections of Carey's own life.
"So many people we've met, especially young people, have great dreams and goals, but can't see their way through the challenges to get there," said Carey. "I've faced a lot of challenges in my life...things I know young people can relate to. So I wanted to put it all out there for them in a book that hopefully not only inspires people of all ages, but gives them some courage and clarity toward achieving success by way of my personal experiences. If I can help one person see something in a different light, or encourage them to keep going and believe in themselves, whether with this book or personally, I'm happy."
Carey's story is one of faith, perseverance and character in the face adversity, throughout much of his life. He grew up on Grand Rapids' southeast side with a single mother and three sisters. There was barely enough money for food, let alone new clothes, and Carey was often bullied at school. Through his struggles, he found a way to succeed in the classroom, and excel on the football field, enough so to be drafted into the NFL in 2009, and hold a highly-accomplished eight-year career as a professional football player. Carey also launched his own real estate company, founded of a ministry, and co-founded the S.T.E.M. literacy program in Detroit, all before the age of 30.
As an NFL pro, Carey used his platform to create The Don Carey REECH Foundation to provide students the opportunity of academic achievement and exposure to diverse arenas, to ultimately be inspired to reach their maximum potential and become significant contributors to society. That mission is the foundation of his on-going REECH community initiatives, and one he hopes his new book will help young people achieve.
