Campbell: All 3 phases played a role in Lions' loss to Vikings

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell wasn't sugarcoating anything after his team lost at home coming out of their bye week to the Minnesota Vikings Sunday, 27-24.

"You don't want any of these to happen. It's like a slap in the face," Campbell said. "That happens. You don't want them to happen, but hey, here it is. Now you're forced to stand there and stare at it, 'How are we going to fix this?'

"It's about cleaning it up and correcting the errors and we move on."

Campbell liked the week of practice the Lions had coming out of their bye and expected his team to play well against the Vikings. Instead, he was most disappointed in the fact that all three phases underperformed and played a factor in what he described as their worst performance 'in a long time.'

"We made every critical error you need to at the right time to lose it," he said. "Perfect storm. When you don't play well in all three phases, that falls on the head coach."

Detroit's offense rushed for only 65 yards, turned the ball over on a David Montgomery fumble and were just 5-for-17 on third down and 1-for-3 in the red zone.

The Lions' defense did some good things, but still allowed three touchdowns as Minnesota was 3-for-5 in the red zone and came up with critical plays when they needed them, none bigger than the Jalen Nailor 16-yard completion on 3rd & 5 late that sealed the win for Minnesota.

Detroit's special teams had a field goal blocked and gave up a 61-yard kickoff return on Minnesota's first possession to set up a touchdown.

All three phases had a hand in Sunday's loss for Detroit. Now it's up to Campbell to get his team back on track next week at Washington.

MAHOGANY INJURY

Left guard Christian Mahogany left the game in the fourth quarter with a knee injury. He did not return.

Campbell said the injury will keep Mahogany out until at least late December. The Lions have experienced depth at guard with Kayode Awosika and Trystan Colon. The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday at 4 p.m. if the Lions opt to bring in more depth.

Left tackle Taylor Decker (knee) and right guard Tate Ratledge (shoulder) also left the game briefly due to injury but did return.

"We've got some guys in the hopper," Campbell said. "Skip (Dan Skipper) played today for us. We've got Colon, Yode (Awosika), we got (Michael) Niese on vet squad. We got some guys. So, we'll do what we have to do. We'll fill in and those guys got to be ready to go."

DIVISION STANDINGS

Carolina came up with one of the biggest upsets Sunday, going on the road and beating Green Bay at Lambeau Field. Detroit missed an opportunity to gain on the NFC North leading Packers (5-2-1).

Detroit now sits at 5-3, tied with Chicago, who beat Cincinnati Sunday, and is one game ahead of the Vikings (4-4).

"It's a long season," Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams said. "When it comes down to it, I promise that we're going to give it our all. We know where we're headed, and we still have to see all three of those teams one more time. We decide what goes on by the outcome of those games."
