LANDOVER, Md. – Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell considered taking over play call duties for Detroit's offense when former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson left to take Chicago's head coach job this past offseason.
Campbell said this week he had a million ideas of how to get the Lions' offense playing more consistent, and one of those ideas was taking over as the play caller.
"It was just, 'Let's try something a little different,'" Campbell said after Detroit's 44-22 win against the Washington Commanders Sunday in which the Lions racked up 546 yards of total offense. "I know what I want to do and how I want to do it. Now with that being said, this is a collaborative effort now. I was taking input from (offensive coordinator) John Morton that whole time."
Campbell said it was a collaborative effort between him, Morton and the other offensive coaches Sunday and during the week of preparation, but he just felt like taking over the play calling could change things up a little bit and give the Lions a spark, and it did.
Detroit rushed for 226 yards and averaged 6.8 yards per carry led by Jahmyr Gibbs’ 142 yards and two total scrimmage touchdowns. Lions quarterback Jared Goff threw three touchdowns with a 135.9 rating and wasn't sacked once all game. Detroit's starters on offense scored on all seven of their possessions and the Lions became just the sixth road team in NFL history to produce at least 320 net passing yards and three passing touchdowns to go along with at least 225 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.
"Let's just see if maybe a different play caller can maybe get us a little rhythm," Campbell said. "That's all. Honestly, it's nothing more than that. We made a change, and it was good for today."
Campbell said he decided to make the change after the Minnesota Vikings loss last week. He had an honest conversation with Morton who was all about the team, and they went to work putting a great plan together vs. Washington. Campbell said Morton is particularly vital to Detroit's pass game.
"Yeah, I enjoy it," Campbell said of calling plays. "But I also know it's going to require a lot of me. But it's like anything else. When you do it, you adjust and you start figuring out what you need to do and how you need to do it to become more efficient. It's really ultimately about what's right for the team."

O-LINE PLAY
After giving up five sacks, 11 quarterback hits and 26 total pressures last week in a loss to Minnesota, Detroit's offensive line had a huge bounce-back game vs. Washington Sunday.
Detroit did not allow a sack vs. the Commanders, and Goff was hit only five times all game. The o-line also plowed the way for 226 rushing yards and a 6.8-yard average per rush as Washington didn't have a single tackle for loss in the contest.
"They were really great," Goff said after the game of the offensive line play. "I think it started early. You could feel them leaning on those guys early in the run game and then that kind of leads to everything else. Those guys have a lot of pride and wanted to play really well today and they did that."
BIG DAY FOR GIBBS
Gibbs had himself a day Sunday, becoming just the second player in franchise history to produce a game with 140-plus rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns with 30-plus receiving yards and a receiving touchdown.
Coming off a game last week in which he had just 25 rushing yards with a 2.8 average in the loss to Minnesota, Goff said they thought during the week in game planning they could get Gibbs in favorable matchups.
"I thought he did a great job out of the backfield as a receiver," Goff said of Gibbs. "Obviously in the run game he was incredible, too. He's a unique weapon for us if we can use him like we did tonight."
EXTRA POINT
- Starting cornerback Terrion Arnold left the game in the first half with a concussion. He'll enter the league's return-to-play protocol this week and we'll have to monitor his status for next week's game in Philadelphia.
