Lions All-Pro Running Back Jahmyr Gibbs gab am Freitag nach der Unterzeichnung seiner neuen Vertragsverlängerung über drei Jahre zu, dass die vergangenen beiden Wochen abseits des Trainingsplatzes für ihn alles andere als einfach waren. Sein neuer Vertrag hält ihn bis einschließlich der Saison 2030 in Detroit.
"Der ganze Prozess war extrem stressig", sagte Gibbs. "Ich wollte einfach nur Football spielen. Ich habe es vermisst, mit meinen Teammates und Coaches auf dem Platz zu stehen. Jetzt wieder mit Pads draußen zu sein, macht einfach Spaß. Es fühlt sich viel besser an."
Gibbs, 24, hatte noch zwei Jahre seines Rookie Vertrags vor sich, nachdem die Lions in dieser Offseason die Option für das fünfte Vertragsjahr gezogen hatten. Dennoch wollte die Franchise ihren Star-Running-Back langfristig an sich binden und damit einen weiteren zentralen Baustein des Teams für die kommenden Jahre sichern.
Damit reiht sich Gibbs in eine Gruppe von Leistungsträgern ein, die Detroit in den vergangenen Jahren mit langfristigen Verträgen ausgestattet hat. Dazu gehören Quarterback Jared Goff, die Wide Receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown und Jameson Williams, Tackle Penei Sewell, Edge Rusher Aidan Hutchinson, Defensive Lineman Alim McNeill, Safety Kerby Joseph und Linebacker Jack Campbell.
"Vor allem will ich mit diesem Team einen Super Bowl gewinnen und alles tun, was dafür nötig ist", sagte Gibbs.
Mit der Vertragsverlängerung dürfte nun auch Gibbs' Rückkehr ins Training Camp unmittelbar bevorstehen. Coaches und Mitspieler warten bereits seit dem Start des Camps in der vergangenen Woche darauf, den Running Back wieder auf dem Trainingsplatz zu sehen.
"Natürlich kann ich es kaum erwarten, Gibbs wieder draußen zu haben", sagte Head Coach Dan Campbell. "Mit jedem Tag, der vergeht, hat man das Gefühl, einen weiteren Tag mit ihm zu verlieren, einen Tag, an dem er mit den Jungs arbeiten und seinen Teil beitragen könnte. Aber am Ende gilt: Es ist erledigt, wenn es erledigt ist."

Gibbs gehört mittlerweile zu den besten Running Backs der NFL. Der dreimalige Pro Bowler soll auch unter dem neuen Offensive Coordinator Drew Petzing eine Schlüsselrolle spielen, wenn die Lions 2026 ihrem Laufspiel neue Impulse verleihen wollen.
Seine bisherigen Zahlen unterstreichen seinen Stellenwert. Gibbs erzielte in seinen ersten drei NFL Seasons 49 Touchdowns, so viele wie kein anderer Spieler in der Geschichte der Liga nach seinen ersten drei Saisons. Zudem ist er der einzige Spieler in der Geschichte der Lions, der in mehreren Seasons jeweils mindestens 17 Touchdowns verbuchen konnte.
In der vergangenen Saison erlief Gibbs 1.223 Yards und 13 Touchdowns. Gleichzeitig stellte er mit 77 gefangenen Pässen für 616 Yards einen persönlichen Bestwert auf und steuerte fünf weitere Touchdowns durch die Luft bei.
Seit seinem Einstieg in die NFL im Jahr 2023 kommt Gibbs auf durchschnittlich 5,3 Yards pro Lauf. In diesem Zeitraum ist das der zweitbeste Wert der gesamten Liga.
Auch seine Rolle innerhalb der Offense ist kontinuierlich gewachsen. Nachdem Gibbs als Rookie 2023 bei 57 Prozent der offensiven Snaps auf dem Feld stand, waren es 2024 56 Prozent. In der vergangenen Saison stieg sein Anteil auf 67 Prozent.
2026 könnte diese Zahl noch einmal deutlich nach oben gehen. Nachdem die Lions David Montgomery in dieser Offseason nach Houston getradet haben, spricht vieles dafür, dass Gibbs künftig noch stärker im Mittelpunkt des Detroiter Laufspiels stehen wird.
Die Vertragsverlängerung schafft dafür langfristige Klarheit: Einer der explosivsten Playmaker der NFL bleibt ein zentraler Bestandteil der Lions Offense und soll auch in den kommenden Jahren eine entscheidende Rolle bei Detroits Jagd nach dem Super Bowl spielen.
