How he fits: Charlton has ideal size to play opposite Ziggy Ansah along Detroit's defensive front. He has a rare combination of size, length and agility. He garnered first-team All-Big Ten honors this past season after leading Michigan with 9.5 sacks. He also had 13 tackles for loss. He tallied a sack in seven of his final 10 games including at lease one in each of Michigan's last four contests.
The Lions have Ansah, Kerry Hyder, Cornelius Washington, Brandon Copeland and Anthony Zettel currently under contract at the position. They could certainly use one or more talented youngsters to add to that mix.
Key stat: Charlton didn't earn a full-time starting role until his senior season at Michigan. He played in 46 career games with 15 starts.
What they had to say about him: "Charlton is an ascending prospect with the size, length, athleticism and pass-rushing potential that NFL general managers dream of. What you see today might not be what you get. While his production coming out of college will be modest, he could become a substantially better player as a pro if he's committed to the weight room and willing to absorb coaching. High-impact defensive end with all-pro potential is his ceiling. His floor is solid starter." – Lance Zierlein, NFL.com
How he stacks up: ESPN.com draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. lists Charlton as the fourth-best defensive end in this draft. Scouts Inc. lists Charlton as the 17th best prospect overall and the third-best defensive end. Charlton is listed as the 28th overall and fourth-best defensive end prospect by CBSSports.com.
What he had to say: "The thing that sets me apart is I'm versatile. I play a little bit of every position, inside, outside. I've played heavy. I've played light. The thing about me, too, is look at my pass-rush moves, I've done a little of everything. My arsenal is wide. I can stab, I can bull, I can spin, I can speed rush. So, the arsenal I have and the combination of all the positions I've played: three-tech, four-tech, five-tech, weak-side end, all of those things kind of add up to separate me a little bit."
