Lions offseason questions: Positions of need

The 2025 NFL Scouting Combine is in the books, and the Detroit Lions now turn the page to free agency and the NFL Draft.

It's the perfect time to reshape the roster and get the team ready for the 2025 season.

What is the Lions' biggest position of need? I asked the Detroitlions.com crew, and here's what they had to say:

Tim Twentyman: Defensive line

Lions general manager Brad Holmes has done a great job building this roster and re-signing core pieces, and because of it, there aren't a lot of glaring holes on the roster as we head into free agency. For me, last year showed a team can never have too much depth along the defensive line, and adding talent and depth at both the edge and interior of the defensive line is important this offseason.

Dannie Rogers: Offensive line/Edge rusher

This offseason has some ripples in terms of where the Lions could exert the most resources and energy when it comes to bolstering the roster. If veteran guard Kevin Zeitler departs Detroit as a free agent, I can see Brad Holmes and Co. turning their attention to the offensive line free agents that will hit the market soon.

Looking ahead to the draft, Holmes calls star pass rushers a premium position and there are far less out there readily available. If Holmes has a pass rusher that aligns with best available on his board come April, that's an area of need the Lions can look to with the return of Aidan Hutchinson and a chance for a rookie to learn under Hutch and veteran Za'Darius Smith.

Cole Bambini: Edge rusher

Hutchinson led the Lions with 7.5 sacks last year despite playing in just five games. Smith, who played in eight games with Detroit after being traded from Cleveland in November, finished second with 4.0 sacks.

Even with Hutchinson's expected full return from injury, either signing a young edge rusher in free agency or drafting one will add depth to a defensive line that suffered so much attrition. There's plenty of linebackers and defensive linemen with position versatility in this draft that Detroit, who ranked tied for 23rd with 37.0 total sacks in 2024, could take advantage of.

Editor's Pick: Edge rusher

I'm going with the group here. This position was decimated by injury last year and while the Lions had decent depth, it was tested beyond imagination. We always say it but it's so true: You can never have too many good pass rushers.
